Seeing their excited faces, I knew I had their approval. Jack and I tied the knot a few months later, and for a while, everything seemed perfect.<\/p>\n
But then there was Julia, my mother-in-law. From day one, it was clear she didn\u2019t like me\u2014or the girls.<\/p>\n
She always had something against single moms, and she made it painfully obvious that she didn\u2019t consider my daughters a part of the family.<\/p>\n
“They\u2019re not related to me by blood,” she\u2019d say with a sniff. “I don\u2019t see why I should treat them like grandchildren.”<\/p>\n

So when Julia announced she was organizing a big family trip, I was cautiously optimistic. She even asked for the girls’ details to book their tickets. At that point, I thought maybe she was finally coming around.<\/p>\n

The day of the trip arrived, and we all met at the airport. Jack\u2019s sister and her family were there too. Everything seemed fine until we headed to the check-in counter.<\/p>\n

“Give me $600 right now, or I\u2019ll tell the airline I lost your little rascals\u2019 tickets,” she hissed. “This is a family trip, and they ARE NOT.”<\/p>\n

“$600 or the girls won\u2019t go!”<\/p>\n
I was stunned. My first instinct was to grab my girls and leave, but I knew that wouldn\u2019t solve anything. Instead, I handed over the money, letting her think she\u2019d won. Little did she know, I was planning my revenge as I pretended to be okay with what she said.<\/p>\n
During the flight, I kept thinking of a way to teach her a lesson.<\/p>\n
Should I expose her directly? I wondered. Should I do something to make her feel bad?<\/p>\n
Then came the idea I\u2019d been waiting for. It was the perfect moment.<\/p>\n
Soon, we arrived at our destination and checked into the hotel. It was a gorgeous resort with all the amenities you could dream of.<\/p>\n

“I just want to say how happy I am that we could all come together for this special family trip,” she began, her smile sickly sweet. “But I think it\u2019s important to recognize who really belongs in this family.”<\/p>\n
She paused, looking directly at me.<\/p>\n
“And who doesn\u2019t.”<\/p>\n
The table fell silent. Jack gave me a worried look, but I just smiled. This was my moment.<\/p>\n
“Family is everything. Which is why I arranged something very special for you.”<\/p>\n
Before she could respond, I pulled out my phone and played the video I\u2019d secretly recorded at the airport. Her voice, demanding $600 or threatening to cancel my daughters’ tickets, echoed through the restaurant.<\/p>\n
Julia\u2019s face went pale as everyone listened in shocked silence. But I wasn\u2019t done yet.<\/p>\n
“You see, I couldn\u2019t let something like that slide,” I continued calmly.<\/p>\n
“So, I made a few changes to our accommodations. Jack, the girls, and I are staying in the penthouse suite for the rest of the trip. All expenses paid, courtesy of the money you extorted from me. I figured it was the least I could do after what you tried to pull.”<\/p>\n
The table was dead silent. Julia gaped at me, speechless. Then, to my surprise, Jack started clapping slowly. Soon, the entire table joined in.<\/p>\n
“Gracie, I had no idea,” Jack\u2019s sister said, looking horrified. “Mom, how could you?”<\/p>\n
Julia, humiliated and furious, tried to defend herself.<\/p>\n
“I… I didn\u2019t mean… It was just a joke!”<\/p>\n
“A joke?” I replied. “Threatening to leave my children behind is your idea of a joke? I don\u2019t think so.”<\/p>\n
Julia stormed out without another word, leaving the rest of us to finish dinner in a much lighter mood. As we were leaving, Jack\u2019s father approached me.<\/p>\n
“Gracie, I\u2019m so sorry,” he said, looking genuinely upset. “I had no idea Julia would do something like this. Please know that I consider your girls family, no matter what.”<\/p>\n
“Thank you,” I smiled. “That means a lot.”<\/p>\n
The rest of the trip was amazing. We enjoyed every bit of that penthouse suite, and my girls had the time of their lives. This isn\u2019t where the story ends.<\/p>\n
