Last week, I came home a few times to something that didn\u2019t sit right with me. An extension lead\u2014bright orange, impossible to miss\u2014was running from my neighbor\u2019s garage straight into the socket on the back of my house. I unplugged it the first time, assuming it was a one-off mistake.<\/p>\n
Maybe he thought it was his. Maybe he was in a rush. I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. I even remember standing there a moment longer than necessary, holding that cable in my hand, wondering if I was overreacting to something harmless.<\/p>\n
But the second time, I actually caught him in the act. \u201cMate, that\u2019s my power you\u2019re using,\u201d I said, trying to keep my voice calm. \u201cIt\u2019s on my meter.\u201d<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t apologize.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t even look embarrassed. Instead, he laughed\u2014actually laughed\u2014and waved it off with, \u201cC\u2019mon, man. It\u2019s only pennies!\u201d There was something about the way he said it\u2014casual, dismissive\u2014that made it clear this wasn\u2019t a one-time thing. To him, it wasn\u2019t even wrong. It was just convenient.<\/p>\n
That should\u2019ve been the end of it. Or at least, that\u2019s what I told myself as I went back inside, trying to ignore the uneasy feeling creeping up my spine.<\/p>\n
Except it wasn\u2019t. A couple of days later, while I was out, he did it again. No shame, no hesitation.<\/p>\n
Just helped himself like my home was his personal charging station. That\u2019s when I\u2019d had enough. I bought a lockable cover for the outdoor socket and installed it. I double-checked it twice after fitting it, tugging on it just to be sure. It felt ridiculous at the time\u2014locking up electricity like it was something you could steal in broad daylight\u2014but apparently, that\u2019s exactly what was happening.<\/p>\n
Not to be dramatic\u2014just to protect my own property. This morning, though, things took a turn. A note came through my letterbox.<\/p>\n
A smug, handwritten message that made my stomach drop. He said that since I\u2019d \u201cblocked the community socket\u201d\u2014yes, he called my socket that\u2014he would now need to charge his e-bike inside my house when it rains. And then he had the audacity to ask me to leave my back gate unlocked so he could come in on Saturday. There was even a time scribbled at the bottom, like he was booking an appointment in a place he already owned.<\/p>\n
I just stood there in my hallway, note in hand, absolutely frozen. The house suddenly felt different\u2014less like mine, more like something that had been quietly encroached on. The idea of him walking through my gate, into my space, like it was nothing\u2026 it made my chest tighten.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not trying to cause a neighborhood war. I even offered a reasonable solution\u2014told him I\u2019d go halves on getting a sparky to fit an outdoor socket on his own wall. I kept my tone polite, measured, even though my patience was wearing thin.<\/p>\n
He flat-out refused. Said it was \u201cunnecessary\u201d and that I was \u201cmaking things complicated.\u201d Now I\u2019m hearing he\u2019s been telling other neighbors that I\u2019m being tight. That I\u2019m making a fuss over \u201ca bit of electricity.\u201d I\u2019ve noticed the looks, too\u2014those subtle, sideways glances that make you wonder what version of the story they\u2019ve been told.<\/p>\n
But I can\u2019t shake the feeling that this isn\u2019t about money at all.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s about boundaries. Respect. And the fact he thinks he can steamroll right over mine. And if I give in\u2014if I unlock that gate, even once\u2014what\u2019s next? A key \u201cjust in case\u201d? Letting himself in when I\u2019m not home? The line keeps moving, and somehow I\u2019m the one expected to step back every time.<\/p>\n
