I didn\u2019t really get to have a childhood; I was basically \u201cmom #2,\u201d and not in a cute or symbolic way\u2014more like a role I never got to refuse, even when I was exhausted, even when I didn\u2019t understand why it always had to be me.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a huge part of why I decided early on that I never want kids. Ever. I\u2019ve already lived through diapers, 2 a.m. crying fits, and the constant \u201csorry, you can\u2019t hang out with your friends\u2014someone has to watch the baby.\u201d I\u2019ve been there. I hated every second of it. I\u2019m done. And I don\u2019t say that lightly\u2014it comes from years of feeling like my life was always on pause for someone else.<\/p>\n
Fast forward to now: I\u2019m in my mid-20s and living with my boyfriend. I love him\u2014he\u2019s kind, funny, and we click on so many levels. The problem is, he\u2019s convinced I\u2019ll eventually \u201cchange my mind\u201d about having kids, like it\u2019s just a phase I haven\u2019t outgrown yet rather than a decision I\u2019ve lived through and stood by.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve told him, very clearly, more than once, that I won\u2019t. I don\u2019t want to repeat the cycle of poverty, and honestly, I just want the chance to live for myself for once without constantly being responsible for another life depending on me. We\u2019re both working, and we\u2019re barely covering our bills as it is, carefully counting every expense at the end of each month.<\/p>\n
A kid wouldn\u2019t just strain us\u2014it would break us, financially and mentally. I\u2019ve tried explaining that it\u2019s not about dislike or fear, but about reality, stability, and survival. Then one day he called, practically buzzing with excitement, like he had solved something between us: \u201cI have a big surprise, I adopted a puppy for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was stunned. Not confused for a second\u2014just immediately uneasy, like something about the timing and tone didn\u2019t sit right. His reasoning?<\/p>\n
He wanted me to \u201csee how caring for someone else could change my mind,\u201d as if my entire history of raising children wasn\u2019t already evidence enough of what caring for someone else looks like in my world.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not anti-puppy by any means, but I\u2019m definitely not okay with a living creature being used as an experiment to push me toward motherhood. And now I feel stuck in a way I didn\u2019t expect. I love him, but moments like this make it feel like he\u2019s not just misunderstanding me\u2014he\u2019s actively rewriting what I\u2019ve told him.<\/p>\n
It feels like a boundary I\u2019ve repeated a hundred times is just being ignored, tested, and quietly dismissed under the excuse of \u201cgood intentions.\u201d So now I\u2019m wondering: what do I do? Is this a massive red flag, or just an annoying misstep that crossed a line without meaning to?<\/p>\n
