I\u2019d been talking to Lily for about a week before she suggested we go out.<\/p>\n
She was stunning\u2014long auburn hair, bright green eyes, and a smile that made her Instagram pictures look like something out of a magazine.<\/p>\n
I was surprised she was interested in me, but hey, sometimes luck strikes in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n

I exhaled, pushing down my frustration. The food came out, and while I tried to enjoy my meal, Lily barely touched hers between glancing at her phone and responding to messages.<\/p>\n
At one point, I noticed her angling her phone away from me, like she didn\u2019t want me catching a name or reading a message by accident. She\u2019d smile at the screen, then go blank the second she looked back at me.<\/p>\n
Emily came by again, refilling my water. She gave me a subtle look, raising an eyebrow as if to say, You okay?<\/p>\n
I just nodded and forced a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen this before. The type who uses dates for expensive meals and never plans to call again. If you want, I can, you know\u2026 work some magic.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was half amused, half embarrassed.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd what exactly does \u2018work some magic\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n
She leaned in conspiratorially. \u201cLet\u2019s just say\u2026 you\u2019re not the first guy she\u2019s tried this with.\u201d<\/p>\n
That made my stomach drop.<\/p>\n
I stared at her. \u201cYou\u2019ve seen *her* before?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily gave the smallest nod. \u201cNot just me. A couple of the staff recognized her the second she walked in. Same routine. Same type of place. Same distracted act. She orders the priciest thing on the menu, keeps checking her phone, then finds a reason to disappear when the bill comes.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a second, I just sat there, heat creeping up my neck. It wasn\u2019t just a bad date. I\u2019d been played from the start.<\/p>\n

Lily barely glanced at it before saying, \u201cThanks, you got this, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when Emily reappeared, looking concerned. \u201cSir,\u201d she said, holding out the bill, \u201cyour card was declined.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lily\u2019s face turned toward me sharply. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
For half a second, I forgot we were acting.<\/p>\n
I frowned.<\/p>\n
\u201cUh\u2026 that doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d I pulled out my wallet, but Emily shook her head.<\/p>\n

For the first time all night, Lily actually looked nervous.<\/p>\n

Her eyes flicked to the bill, then to me, then toward the front windows. I could almost see the calculation happening behind her expression. Stay and risk paying\u2026 or bail and save herself.<\/p>\n
Lily groaned, rolling her eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cFine. Give me a second.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she did exactly what Emily expected\u2014she grabbed her purse and stormed out of the restaurant.<\/p>\n
Emily and I both watched as she walked past the windows, down the street\u2026 and kept going. No hesitation. No glance back. Not even the courtesy to pretend she was coming back.<\/p>\n
A weird silence settled over the table after she disappeared.<\/p>\n
\u201cWow,\u201d I muttered, still stunned.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe really just left me here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily crossed her arms and let out a breath through her nose. \u201cYep.<\/p>\n
And if it makes you feel any better, she was already texting someone else before the appetizers hit the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
That should\u2019ve made me feel worse, but somehow it didn\u2019t. At least now I knew I hadn\u2019t imagined any of it.<\/p>\n
Then Emily grinned and slid a slip of paper in front of me. I glanced down.<\/p>\n

I looked up so fast I nearly knocked over my glass.<\/p>\n

She winked. \u201cI \u2018accidentally\u2019 comped your meal.<\/p>\n

I let out a disbelieving laugh, the kind that comes after your body finally realizes the crisis is over. \u201cYou saved me.\u201d<\/p>\n
She shrugged. \u201cLike I said, I\u2019ve seen this before. And honestly? You looked like a decent guy getting set up for a really expensive lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the first time all night, I smiled genuinely.<\/p>\n
\u201cI owe you one.\u201d<\/p>\n
She tapped the table. \u201cTell you what. You can owe me a drink sometime.<\/p>\n
With someone who actually wants to be on a date with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at her, really looked at her this time. Emily wasn\u2019t just kind; she was beautiful, her eyes filled with warmth and humor. And she\u2019d just gone out of her way to help a total stranger when she easily could\u2019ve just dropped the bill and walked off.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat,\u201d I said, sliding my phone across the table to her, \u201csounds like the best deal I\u2019ve had all night.\u201d<\/p>\n
She smiled, typing in her number.<\/p>\n
As I walked out of the restaurant, I glanced down the street where Lily had disappeared.<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t mad. Not anymore.<\/p>\n
If anything, I was grateful.<\/p>\n
