I work with young children. One day, a little 6YO girl turned to another girl who was being disruptive and calmly said, \u201cGo and see a therapist darling, you sound like you need one.\u201d It was hilarious at the time, but also kind of sad that the girl had heard that phrase often enough to be able to parrot it during an argument.<\/p>\n
A 7YO once told me that he was afraid to go to his parents\u2019 room, because \u201cFoxy lives there.\u201d Since he\u2019s past the \u2018fear of monsters\u2019 phase, I figured it was just his imagination going wild. But I still wanted to talk to his mom about it.<\/p>\n
Turns out the kid\u2019s dad is a furry, and has a fox suit in the closet, and the kid had found it one day, when he went into the closet looking for a place to hide during hide and seek. The way the boy described it, with wide eyes and total conviction, made me double-check the story in disbelief.<\/p>\n
I teach two-year-olds, and was asking<\/p>\n
the kids what their parents\u2019 names were,<\/p>\n
just to see if they knew. I ask a little boy,<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s Mommy\u2019s name?\u201d He says, \u201cMila.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then I ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s Daddy\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n
He looks confused, as if he\u2019s trying to<\/p>\n
figure out the answer, but can\u2019t. So I ask,<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat does Mommy call Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n
Assuming he would say \u2018John,\u2019 instead<\/p>\n
he looks up at me and says, \u201cBig Papa.\u201d<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t help but bust out laughing, but the dead seriousness in his tone made me pause. Who had taught him that? And why was it normal to him?<\/p>\n
I was babysitting a 7-year-old girl.<\/p>\n
One day, she told me her mom\u2019s name<\/p>\n
isn\u2019t her real name.<\/p>\n
That she made it up<\/p>\n
\u201cfor work,\u201d and it was like having a new<\/p>\n
mommy. I tried to ask more questions,<\/p>\n

One day, it was story time, and all the kids<\/p>\n
were sitting in a circle on the reading rug.<\/p>\n
She was reading them a book about<\/p>\n
animals, and the sounds each one makes.<\/p>\n
An owl comes up, and none of them know<\/p>\n
it, so she says, \u201cIt\u2019s an owl, and it makes<\/p>\n
the sound \u2018Whooo! Whoooo.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
This is when one of the kids decided to<\/p>\n
share, \u201cOh!<\/p>\n
My mom makes that noise when<\/p>\n
Mom and Dad are having private time in<\/p>\n
