Hosting Thanksgiving was my responsibility during the decade I was married to Ryan. I\u2019m Amelia.<\/p>\n
I was 35 at the time of this story. I was also a wife, a mom of two, and basically a chef-maid combo.<\/p>\n
This particular holiday started at 6 a.m. as I had to prepare for a house full of guests.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ryan simply woke up around 11 a.m. and sprawled on the couch to yell at some football game.<\/p>\n
By noon, the turkey was roasting, the green bean casserole was ready to go, and my daughters were busy drawing hand turkeys at the kitchen table. That\u2019s when the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n
I frowned and wiped my hands on my apron, muttering, \u201cWho even delivers on Thanksgiving?\u201d<\/p>\n
Outside stood a cheerful delivery guy holding a box that smelled divine. \u201cSpecial delivery,\u201d he announced, thrusting it into my hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry. We didn\u2019t order this,\u201d I said, confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cLady, I don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n
I just want to finish this day quickly. Enjoy!\u201d he chirped before walking off.<\/p>\n
Okay. I carried the box to the counter, thinking maybe Ryan had planned something sweet for once in his life.<\/p>\n
Inside was a perfectly roasted turkey, golden brown and so beautifully presented it could\u2019ve been on a magazine cover.<\/p>\n
My heart softened for a moment. Could he really have done this for me? Though, I wished he would\u2019ve told me before I put a turkey in the oven.<\/p>\n
But then I saw the note.<\/p>\n
It was tucked beside the turkey, written in sharp, cursive handwriting: \u201cThank you for sharing your husband with me!<\/p>\n
Happy Thanksgiving. XO, Kelsey.\u201d<\/p>\n
I read it twice as my brain refused to process the words. Sharing my husband?<\/p>\n
The room suddenly felt smaller, the air heavier, like something unseen had just stepped inside my home and taken a seat at my table.<\/p>\n
Was this a sick joke? I glanced at Ryan, who was still glued to the TV, hollering at some touchdown.<\/p>\n
Taking advantage of his obliviousness, I picked up his phone from the counter. The lock screen lit up just then with a notification from someone named \u201cKelsey .\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t want to snoop, but I had to know.<\/p>\n
He\u2019d never given me his code, but I knew what it was: the six digits of Peyton Manning\u2019s birthday. Not even our girls were as important as football.
My hands shook as I clicked on the message from Kelsey. I hoped until the last minute that this was some big misunderstanding.<\/p>\n
But the texts confirmed my suspicions. She had sent a message that read: \u201cCan\u2019t wait to see you later.\u201d<\/p>\n
And then, a second that said, \u201cDid she get the turkey yet? LOL.<\/p>\n
Can\u2019t wait to see her face. Happy Thanksgiving, babe.\u201d<\/p>\n
There were older messages too\u2014weeks, maybe months\u2014hidden beneath casual jokes and heart emojis. Plans. Meetings. Lies I had lived inside without ever seeing.<\/p>\n
So, yes. That\u2019s how I discovered that my husband was having an affair, and Kelsey was laughing at me.<\/p>\n
Actually, they\u2019d both been playing me for a fool. But no longer.<\/p>\n
I took a deep breath to compose myself and considered. Once I came up with a plan, I had to act quickly, so I could get through Thanksgiving and\u2026 exact my revenge.<\/p>\n
As was the norm for the past decade, Thanksgiving dinner was always a big production.<\/p>\n
Ryan\u2019s parents, sister, and a few of my own relatives gathered around the table. My girls were running around showing off their art.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, I kept my hostess mask firmly in place, greeting them all with a smile while Ryan talked about the football game.<\/p>\n
As we sat down to eat, Ryan leaned back in his chair, grinning like he was king of the castle. \u201cYou know, Thanksgiving wouldn\u2019t be the same without Amelia.<\/p>\n
She works so hard every year. I really have the best taste in women,\u201d he said, chuckling.<\/p>\n
Something about that wording had me boiling inside.<\/p>\n
His mother nodded approvingly. \u201cYou\u2019re so lucky to have her.\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled sweetly and kept eating in silence.<\/p>\n
When everyone was done with their main course, I stood and ushered the girls from their seats. I didn\u2019t want them to see or hear what was coming.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcuse me for a moment. I have a little surprise for the girls in their room.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll be back with our dessert.\u201d<\/p>\n
After settling the girls in their room, I walked to the kitchen and returned to the dining room with the mystery turkey in its fancy box. The room fell silent as I placed it in the center of the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cAmelia, we just ate a whole turkey. Why did you make a second one?\u201d Ryan\u2019s mother asked, furrowing her eyebrows.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis arrived earlier today,\u201d I announced to her and everyone at the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cA special delivery for me from Ryan\u2019s mistress.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryan\u2019s eyes bulged as the rest of the table swiveled their heads to him. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d he demanded, acting offended.<\/p>\n
I held up the note. \u201cIt\u2019s all here.\u201d<\/p>\n
His face turned as white as the mashed potatoes.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo\u2014this isn\u2019t real. It\u2019s just some prank, Amelia!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, really?\u201d I said, pulling his phone from my pocket. I scrolled to Kelsey\u2019s messages and handed the phone to his mother.<\/p>\n
\u201cCare to explain these texts, which seem to be from the same woman who signed the note?\u201d<\/p>\n
His mother\u2019s expression changed as she read their conversation. \u201cRyan, what is this?\u201d she asked, leaning over the table with a distraught face.<\/p>\n
Ryan stayed quiet but jumped when his father slammed his fist on the table. \u201cAnswer your mother, right now!<\/p>\n
Is this real? Are you cheating on your wife of ten years? The mother of your kids!\u201d<\/p>\n
My husband looked down and started crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cYOU PATHETIC LITTLE\u2014\u201d his father began but stopped himself.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow could you do this to your family?\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryan\u2019s sister stood from the table and pointed at her brother. \u201cYou disgust me. Amelia deserves so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019d always liked her.<\/p>\n
Ryan sniffled, \u201cAmelia, we-we ne-need to talk about thi-this in private\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, we\u2019ll talk,\u201d I said, cutting him off.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut first, I have one more surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room was tense as I reached under the table and pulled out the final piece of my plan: a small bag containing a shiny new set of locks and a piece of paper with a phone number scrawled across it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis,\u201d I said, placing them in front of Ryan, \u201cis to show you what\u2019s going to happen next. The card has the number for my divorce lawyer, whom I\u2019ll call as soon as this holiday is over. The locks are for the house, which I\u2019ll change tomorrow.<\/p>\n
No, I won\u2019t give you any new keys. So, you have until then to pack your things.\u201d<\/p>\n
He started sputtering. \u201cYo-you can\u2019t do this!\u201d he finally said, wiping snot from his face.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I can.<\/p>\n
The decision\u2019s been made. Happy Thanksgiving, Ryan. And you can take this dirty turkey back to Kelsey.<\/p>\n
She can keep you all to herself. No more sharing!\u201d I added.<\/p>\n
Ryan\u2019s mother burst into tears as his father shook his head in disgust. His sister glared at him, muttering, \u201cYou need to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
With this tail between his legs, Ryan stood and walked out.<\/p>\n
For the next few days, he called and texted non-stop, begging me for forgiveness.<\/p>\n
But I ignored every message. His family sided with me completely, which was a huge relief.<\/p>\n
His sister even told me that when Ryan realized he had no options, he went to Kelsey\u2019s house. Turns out, she wasn\u2019t actually interested in living with him and shut the door in his face.<\/p>\n
She\u2019d allegedly just wanted to reveal the affair once and for all.<\/p>\n
I still didn\u2019t like her, but at least, she saved me from staying married to Ryan.<\/p>\n
By Christmas, I\u2019d filed for divorce, and my daughters and I spent the holidays at my mom\u2019s house.<\/p>\n
I was sad that my in-laws would no longer be my family, but we\u2019d always be connected through my daughters.<\/p>\n
The following year, we went through the legal process, and I got everything I wanted in the divorce.<\/p>\n
Ryan only had the girls for two weekends a month. But he checked out after that and barely appeared in their lives.<\/p>\n
Every once in a while, however, he sent me texts asking me to take him back.<\/p>\n
By the next Thanksgiving, I was with a wonderful new man, who woke up earlier than me to prepare the feast. He was even a much better cook and took charge of the kitchen while I got to rest for the first time in years.<\/p>\n
Months later, we were engaged, and let\u2019s just say that Ryan didn\u2019t take that well.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s a story for another time.<\/p>\n
I hope that anyone who reads this knows that betrayal will feel awful at that moment, but you have to realize that it can also hold the key to your freedom.<\/p>\n
