Even the quiet lapping of the waves against the wood seemed to whisper a warning.<\/p>\n

She wrapped her thin shawl tighter around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

Beside her, her grandson stood with a crooked, mischievous smile that never quite reached his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma,\u201d he said teasingly, nudging her arm, \u201cyou always say you never learned how to swim. Maybe today you should finally try.\u201d<\/p>\n

She tightened the edge of her headscarf with shaky fingers and frowned at him.<\/p>\n

The splash echoed sharply across the silent lake.<\/p>\n

For a moment she vanished beneath the dark surface.<\/p>\n

When she came back up, everything about her face had changed.<\/p>\n

There was no embarrassment.<\/p>\n

No confusion.<\/p>\n

Only raw, desperate fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp\u2026 I can\u2019t\u2014!\u201d she gasped, swallowing water as she struggled to keep her head above the surface.<\/p>\n

Her hands clawed wildly at the slippery edge of the dock. The soaked fabric of her heavy clothes dragged at her body like invisible weights, pulling her down each time she tried to rise.<\/p>\n

On the dock, laughter erupted.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecord it! Record it!\u201d her daughter-in-law shouted between bursts of laughter. \u201cThis is hilarious!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma deserves an Oscar!\u201d another grandson joked loudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s pretending,\u201d he said dismissively. \u201cShe likes attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old woman slipped beneath the water again.<\/p>\n

For a brief moment, the laughter paused.<\/p>\n

Then she burst back up to the surface, coughing violently, choking for air.<\/p>\n

Her eyes were wide with panic.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease\u2014help me!\u201d she cried, her voice breaking as another wave splashed over her mouth.<\/p>\n

The laughter returned.<\/p>\n

But now it sounded thinner.<\/p>\n

Her elbows scraped against the rough boards.<\/p>\n

Her soaked dress clung to her body as if trying to drag her back into the lake.<\/p>\n

After several exhausting attempts, she finally collapsed onto the pier, her chest rising and falling violently while water streamed from her clothes and hair.<\/p>\n

The laughter faded.<\/p>\n

No one spoke.<\/p>\n

For several long seconds she remained lying there, breathing hard.<\/p>\n

But not because she couldn\u2019t stand.<\/p>\n

Because she was thinking.<\/p>\n

Deciding.<\/p>\n

Her daughter-in-law rushed forward, grabbing her own phone and fumbling with the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll delete it! We\u2019ll erase the video!\u201d she said frantically. \u201cLet\u2019s just go home. Don\u2019t create trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her son stepped closer, his voice suddenly anxious.<\/p>\n

The old woman straightened her posture.<\/p>\n

Something inside her seemed to harden\u2014like steel quietly locking into place.<\/p>\n
