The first thing I do every morning is make coffee. The second thing I do is look out my kitchen window to see if Richard\u2019s blue Honda Civic is blocking my garage.<\/p>\n

Again.<\/p>\n

For six months now, that car has been the first thing I see every morning. Six months of knocking on his door at 7:45 a.m. Six months of fake-smiling through clenched teeth while he fumbles with his keys and mumbles half-hearted apologies.<\/p>\n

Six months of being late to work.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never been great with relationships. By the time I turned thirty-two, I\u2019d had three serious boyfriends. Each one ended the same way: me changing my Netflix password, throwing away their toothbrush, and buying new sheets.<\/p>\n

The last breakup was the worst.<\/p>\n

Jason had said he \u201cneeded space.\u201d Apparently the space he needed was my best friend\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n

After that, I decided relationships simply weren\u2019t worth the trouble.<\/p>\n

So I focused on my career instead.<\/p>\n

As a graphic designer for a marketing firm downtown, I earn enough to afford my small but perfect house. I\u2019ve decorated it exactly the way I want it\u2014no compromises.<\/p>\n

The teal accent wall stays teal. The framed vintage movie posters stay exactly where I hung them. And if I want to eat ice cream for dinner or book a spontaneous trip somewhere, no one gets to complain about it.<\/p>\n

Speaking of travel, I\u2019ve been saving for a solo trip to New Zealand next year.<\/p>\n

Well\u2026 trying to.<\/p>\n

Each time I\u2019m late because of Richard\u2019s parking habits, my boss gives me that look that says, \u201cI\u2019m not angry, just disappointed.\u201d<\/em> Which is somehow worse.<\/p>\n

This morning was no different.<\/p>\n

I peeked through the blinds and there it was again\u2014the blue Honda Civic, parked directly in front of my garage door like it owned the place.<\/p>\n

With a sigh, I set down my mug, slipped on my shoes, and trudged next door.<\/p>\n

Three sharp knocks.<\/p>\n

Footsteps.<\/p>\n

At twenty-eight, Richard Peterson should have had his life together.<\/p>\n

Instead, he\u2019d moved back in with his parents six months ago, supposedly to \u201chelp them out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs. Peterson\u2014the unofficial mayor of neighborhood gossip disguised as a book club host\u2014had already spread the story.<\/p>\n

Richard lost his job at some tech startup in the city.<\/p>\n

Came home with his tail between his legs.<\/p>\n

I might have felt sorry for him if he wasn\u2019t making me late for work three times a week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere, Cindy? My dad\u2019s car takes the garage, and street parking is full by the time I get home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd walk half a mile in the dark after my night shift? Through the woods where those raccoons hang out?\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

Night shift?<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t known that.<\/p>\n

Or that raccoons apparently terrified him.<\/p>\n

Still, my patience was gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cRichard,\u201d I said firmly, \u201cif you block my garage one more time, there will be consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

He raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsequences? Like what? You\u2019ll call a tow truck?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWorse,\u201d I said. \u201cMuch worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCindy, has anyone ever told you you\u2019re kind of intense?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stormed off, my cheeks burning\u2014not because he was wrong, but because I was already plotting exactly what those consequences would be.<\/p>\n

That evening, around ten o\u2019clock, I watched from my living room window.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s blue Honda rolled up the street.<\/p>\n

Well.<\/p>\n

They could become very curious.<\/em><\/p>\n

The next day was Friday.<\/p>\n

Which meant I wouldn\u2019t need to leave early Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Perfect timing.<\/p>\n

After work, I stopped at the pet store and bought a large bag of wild birdseed and a bottle labeled:<\/p>\n

\u201cCritter Potty Training Attractant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cashier raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew pet?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething like that,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

That night, I waited until the neighborhood fell quiet.<\/p>\n

Around midnight, dressed in dark clothes, I slipped outside with a canvas tote bag.<\/p>\n

Richard\u2019s Honda gleamed under the streetlight.<\/p>\n

I worked quickly.<\/p>\n

Birdseed across the hood.<\/p>\n

Birdseed across the roof.<\/p>\n

Birdseed across the trunk.<\/p>\n

Then came the attractant.<\/p>\n

I dabbed it along the door handles, mirrors, and wheel wells.<\/p>\n

His Honda looked like it had survived a wildlife apocalypse.<\/p>\n

Bird droppings streaked the windshield.<\/p>\n

Tiny scratches marked the paint where birds had pecked for seeds.<\/p>\n

And judging by the muddy smears along the doors\u2026<\/p>\n

Something larger had definitely investigated.<\/p>\n

A very fat raccoon sat comfortably on the roof, munching the remaining seeds.<\/p>\n

For a moment he just stared at me.<\/p>\n

Then, unexpectedly\u2026<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what? I probably deserved that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not\u2026 mad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I\u2019m furious,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut also impressed. This is diabolical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d I said, \u201cyou didn\u2019t listen to words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you enlisted the wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ran a hand through his hair.<\/p>\n

\u201cMessage received.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he disappeared into his house.<\/p>\n

A minute later he returned with buckets, gloves, and cleaning supplies.<\/p>\n

He walked straight to my porch and held out a pair of gloves.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would I help you clean a mess you caused?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I owe you an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n

I crossed my arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can apologize from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is\u2026 I didn\u2019t park there because of my dad\u2019s car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI parked there because it gave me an excuse to talk to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been making me late for work for six months\u2026 because you wanted to talk?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it sounds stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut ever since I moved back, I\u2019ve noticed you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow you put fresh flowers on your porch every week. How you sing along to 80s music when you garden. The way you helped Mrs. Peterson carry her groceries that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had no idea what to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kept trying to ask you out,\u201d he continued, \u201cbut every time I saw you, I panicked. So I just apologized for the car instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the worst flirting strategy in human history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m terrible at this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied him for a moment.<\/p>\n

Nice eyes.<\/p>\n

Sincere voice.<\/p>\n

And he hadn\u2019t called the police over the raccoon incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll help you clean your car.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face brightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then,\u201d I continued, \u201cyou\u2019re taking me out for coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cConsider it penance.\u201d<\/p>\n

We spent the next two hours scrubbing bird droppings, vacuuming seed shells, and washing mysterious smudges off the doors.<\/p>\n

It was disgusting.<\/p>\n

But strangely fun.<\/p>\n

Richard told me about losing his job, helping his parents, and his secret dream of opening a coffee shop someday.<\/p>\n

By the time we finished, the car was clean\u2026 but still faintly smelled like raccoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoffee now?\u201d he asked hopefully.<\/p>\n
