That\u2019s exactly what happened to me last Saturday. My boy, Jake, had just led his basketball team to victory against their biggest rivals. I felt ten feet tall as we left the court. To celebrate, we headed to Jake\u2019s favorite diner, a cozy little place that serves the best apple pie in town.<\/p>\n
The smell of sizzling burgers and fresh coffee greeted us as we walked in. \u201cLooks like this is the only free table,\u201d I said as we approached one that hadn\u2019t been cleared yet.<\/p>\n
Jake\u2019s nose wrinkled at the sight of empty cups, used straws, and burger wrappers scattered across the table. And then, to my shock, he turned to an elderly woman mopping nearby.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, old lady!\u201d he barked. \u201cThis table is filthy. Come clean it\u2014now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe deserves your respect,\u201d I snapped. \u201cHow dare you treat her like this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s too old! Look at her!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not your concern. She\u2019s earning her living. And you\u2019re about to learn how hard that is.\u201d I turned to the manager. \u201cDo you agree?\u201d<\/p>\n
The manager\u2019s brows shot up, then he nodded. \u201cAbsolutely. Mrs. Roberts?\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman, Mrs. Roberts, looked stunned but nodded through her tears. \u201cThank you, sir. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t thank me,\u201d I said. \u201cThank him\u2014after he\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake scowled, but the next thing I knew, he was holding a mop. As he scrubbed the floor, I invited Mrs. Roberts to sit with me and ordered her a meal on Jake\u2019s allowance. He grumbled, but I ignored him.<\/p>\n
For the next week, Jake worked every afternoon at that diner. He mopped floors, wiped tables, and emptied trash cans. At first, he complained bitterly, but soon, something shifted.<\/p>\n
