My ex showed up on my doorstep one afternoon, three weeks after I\u2019d finally found the courage to kick him out. I hadn\u2019t expected to see him again so soon. The last time we spoke, I\u2019d told him\u2014calmly but firmly\u2014that I was done. Done with the lies. Done with the broken promises. Done with pretending crumbs were a feast.<\/p>\n

So when I opened the door and saw Alex standing there, shifting his weight like a kid called into the principal\u2019s office, I almost closed it again.<\/p>\n

He held out a thin plastic grocery bag.<\/p>\n

It had always been smoke and mirrors.<\/p>\n

And I had lived in the haze.<\/p>\n

Standing there in my quiet kitchen, I realized something: the groceries weren\u2019t for me. They were for his audience.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t come to help.<\/p>\n

He had come to collect credit.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I decided I was done letting him narrate my life.<\/p>\n

When Darren texted in the group chat later that week\u2014\u201cAlex says he\u2019s still checking in on you, making sure you\u2019re good\u201d\u2014I replied before I could overthink it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAppreciate the concern,\u201d I wrote. \u201cBut just to clarify, he dropped off eggs and bologna. The rest of the fridge? That\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a pause.<\/p>\n
