And smiling.<\/p>\n

Not warmly. Not kindly.<\/p>\n

Victorious.<\/p>\n

As if she had proven a point. As if this was a lesson in who really has control.<\/p>\n

My hands started trembling. My throat burned. I suddenly felt like a stranger in my own house \u2014 standing there in milk-stained pajamas, hair unwashed, body aching.<\/p>\n

No one asked how I was doing.<\/p>\n

No one noticed I looked like I might collapse.<\/p>\n

Without saying a word, I grabbed my purse and walked out the door.<\/p>\n

I sat in my car and sobbed.<\/p>\n

Part of me wondered: Did I overreact?<\/p>\n

But another part \u2014 the exhausted, protective mother inside me \u2014 knew this wasn\u2019t about visitors.<\/p>\n

It was about respect.<\/p>\n
