The husband is behind the wheel, calm and focused.<\/p>\n
Suddenly, his wife turns to him and says in a clear, steady voice,
\u201cAfter twenty years of marriage, I want a divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says nothing\u2014just keeps his eyes on the road and nudges the speed up to 45 mph.<\/p>\n
She continues, \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want you to try to talk me out of it.\u201d
Still, silence. The speedometer creeps to 50.<\/p>\n
She takes a breath. \u201cBecause I\u2019ve been having an affair\u2026 with your best friend.
And, honestly, he\u2019s a far better lover than you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The husband\u2019s hands tighten on the wheel, but he says nothing. The car edges to 55 mph.<\/p>\n
The wife presses on, feeling bold.
\u201cI want the house,\u201d she demands.<\/p>\n
60 mph.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want the car, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
65 mph.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd,\u201d she adds with a smirk, \u201cI\u2019ll take the bank accounts, all the credit cards, and the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now the car begins to drift toward the concrete barrier ahead.<\/p>\n
Her confidence falters. \u201cWait\u2014what are you doing? Don\u2019t you want anything?\u201d<\/p>\n
The husband finally glances her way, his voice calm and even.
\u201cNo,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve already got everything I need.\u201d<\/p>\n
She narrows her eyes. \u201cOh really? And what exactly do you have?\u201d<\/p>\n
Just before they hit the bridge wall, he turns to her, smiling faintly.<\/p>\n
