For months, I thought I\u2019d hit the jackpot with my neighbor\u2019s kids \u2014 two teenagers who spent their Sunday mornings cleaning up the street like they were running for public office. But when I saw one of them hiding something under a bush, I realized their \u201cgood deeds\u201d weren\u2019t what they seemed.<\/p>\n

For months, I truly believed the neighbor\u2019s kids were doing a wonderful thing by cleaning up our street every Sunday. Now, as a woman in my 60s, I\u2019ve seen a lot in this neighborhood.<\/p>\n

The good, the bad, and everything in between \u2014 but seeing two teenagers, barely out of middle school, giving up their weekends to sweep sidewalks and pick up trash? That did something to my heart. It gave me hope for the younger generation, something I don\u2019t come by easily these days.<\/p>\n

Every Sunday morning, I\u2019d sit by my front window with a warm cup of tea and watch them out there. They moved with purpose \u2014 pushing brooms, hauling trash bags, pausing to examine the ground as if they were on a mission. By the time they reached the end of the block, the street looked noticeably better.<\/p>\n

I was impressed. Genuinely.<\/p>\n

They reminded me of my own children when they were younger \u2014 before they grew up, moved away, and life got busy. There was something comforting about watching them. Almost admirable.<\/p>\n

One morning, while watering my plants, I spotted their mother, Grace, stepping out of her house. She always seemed rushed, keys in hand, phone pressed to her ear, probably late for work as usual.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrace!\u201d I called out, waving. \u201cI just have to say, your kids are doing a wonderful job cleaning up the neighborhood. You must be so proud!\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused and looked at me with an odd expression \u2014 not annoyed, not pleased, just\u2026 unsettled. As if I\u2019d said something that didn\u2019t quite fit. Then she smiled politely.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh. Yeah\u2026 thank you,\u201d she said slowly. \u201cThey\u2019re\u2026 good kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something about her tone felt off, but I brushed it aside. I figured she was distracted or in a hurry. I didn\u2019t give it another thought.<\/p>\n

Week after week, I kept watching Becky and Sam \u2014 that\u2019s what I\u2019d gathered their names were \u2014 faithfully out there every Sunday morning. They worked harder than most kids their age ever would.<\/p>\n

Once, I even offered them lemonade. They smiled politely and declined, saying they had \u201cthings to finish up.\u201d I remember thinking how mature they sounded.<\/p>\n

Then last Sunday, something changed.<\/p>\n

It started like any other week. Becky and Sam were halfway down the block, heads bent low, sweeping and scanning the ground. I watched from my window as usual \u2014 until I noticed Sam stop near the large oak tree in front of my house.<\/p>\n

He crouched down, brushed some leaves aside\u2026 and slipped something under a bush.<\/p>\n

Not trash.<\/p>\n

Something deliberate.<\/p>\n

He glanced over his shoulder before standing back up and moving on like nothing had happened.<\/p>\n

I squinted through the glass, my heart giving a little jolt. That didn\u2019t look right.<\/p>\n

Why would he be hiding something?<\/p>\n

I tried to tell myself I was overthinking it, but the feeling wouldn\u2019t go away. I decided I\u2019d wait until they finished and left. After all, I\u2019d lived on this street for over 30 years. When something felt off, it usually was.<\/p>\n

Once the kids disappeared around the corner, I pulled on my gardening gloves and stepped outside. The breeze was cool, the street quiet. I walked toward the bush near the oak tree, my curiosity winning out.<\/p>\n

I bent down and brushed aside the leaves.<\/p>\n

And there it was.<\/p>\n

Coins.<\/p>\n

Loose change scattered beneath the foliage \u2014 quarters, dimes, even a few shiny pennies. My brows knit together as my heart raced.<\/p>\n

What were they doing hiding money?<\/p>\n

Once I knew what to look for, I couldn\u2019t stop. I checked another bush. Then another. Behind the street sign. Along the curb. Near the storm drain.<\/p>\n

Coins everywhere.<\/p>\n

By the time I stopped, I had nearly five dollars jingling in my hand.<\/p>\n

I paced the sidewalk, baffled. \u201cWhy would anyone hide money like this?\u201d I muttered to myself.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, I spotted Grace again, unloading groceries from her car. I decided then and there I was getting answers. I crossed the street, the coins still in my pocket.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrace!\u201d I called.<\/p>\n

She looked up. \u201cOh, hey. Everything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

I forced a casual laugh. \u201cOh yes, I just wanted to mention again how thoughtful your kids are\u2026 you know, cleaning the street every week.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face fell into genuine confusion. \u201cCleaning the street?\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked. \u201cYes. Every Sunday. I see them all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me for a second \u2014 then burst out laughing. The kind of laughter that bends you in half.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no,\u201d she said between laughs. \u201cThey\u2019re not cleaning!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what are they doing?\u201d I asked, completely stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re on a treasure hunt,\u201d she said, wiping tears from her eyes. \u201cTheir grandpa hides coins around the neighborhood every Sunday. It\u2019s a game they\u2019ve played for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood there, speechless.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo\u2026 all this time,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cI thought they were model citizens doing community service\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd really,\u201d she grinned, \u201cthey were hunting treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n

I leaned against the fence and laughed until my sides hurt. \u201cWell, I\u2019ll be! I thought I was watching future city council members!\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled the coins from my pocket and held them up. \u201cAnd this is the treasure I confiscated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grace gasped dramatically. \u201cOh no! You found their stash!\u201d<\/p>\n

We both laughed again, the quiet street echoing with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell them,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ll think it\u2019s hilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we stood there smiling, I shook my head. \u201cYou know, I really believed they were cleaning the street out of kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d Grace said warmly, \u201cthey\u2019re outside, getting exercise, and having fun. That\u2019s something, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded. \u201cTrue enough. And next Sunday, I think I\u2019ll just enjoy the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
