Mark Volman, co-founding member of the 1960s rock band The Turtles, has died at age 78<\/strong> after a brief, unexpected illness<\/strong>, his representatives confirmed. Early Life and Rise to Fame<\/strong><\/p>\n

Volman was born on April 19, 1947<\/strong>, in Los Angeles, California. Wikipedia<\/span>+2<\/span><\/span>EW.com<\/span>+2<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span> He first gained recognition during his high school years when he joined Howard Kaylan\u2019s band, initially called The Crossfires. The group later became The Turtles.<\/p>\n

The Turtles achieved commercial success in the mid-1960s with several hit songs, including a cover of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cIt Ain\u2019t Me Babe\u201d<\/em> (1965), then later \u201cHappy Together\u201d<\/em> (1967), \u201cElenore\u201d<\/em>, \u201cYou Baby\u201d<\/em>, and \u201cShe\u2019d Rather Be with Me\u201d<\/em>. \u201cHappy Together\u201d became their biggest hit.<\/p>\n

Later Career: Flo & Eddie, Collaborations, Academia<\/strong><\/p>\n

After The Turtles broke up in 1970<\/strong>, Volman and Kaylan formed the duo Flo & Eddie<\/strong>. They remained active in the music world, touring and collaborating with various artists. Among their notable associations were with Frank Zappa\u2019s Mothers of Invention, and they contributed backing vocals for artists like T. Rex, Bruce Springsteen, and others.<\/p>\n

In addition to performing, Volman pursued academic interests. He earned a master\u2019s degree in screenwriting and taught music business at Belmont University<\/strong> in Nashville.<\/p>\n

In 2023<\/strong>, he published his memoir Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T. Rex, Flo & Eddie, and More<\/em>, in which he reflected on his long career.<\/p>\n

\n

Health Struggles and Final Days<\/strong><\/p>\n

Volman was diagnosed in 2020<\/strong> with Lewy body dementia<\/strong>, a progressive brain disorder affecting memory, thinking, and movement.<\/p>\n

Despite the diagnosis, he continued performing, including participating in the annual Happy Together<\/em> tours. He publicly revealed his diagnosis in 2023.<\/p>\n

His passing came on September 5, 2025<\/strong>, in Nashville, Tennessee, following a “brief, unexpected illness”. Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Volman leaves behind a legacy as one of the voices of 1960s pop-rock. The Turtles\u2019 songs\u2014especially Happy Together<\/em>\u2014remain widely known and have been repeatedly used in films, commercials, and popular culture. His work with Flo & Eddie also demonstrated a creative restlessness, moving between comedy, collaboration, and activism (especially around musicians\u2019 rights to their recordings).<\/p>\n
