I barely knew the woman, so you can imagine my surprise when I found out I might inherit something from her. I\u2019d met her maybe twice in my entire life, and both times she\u2019d been distant, almost stern. Still, the letter was official, stamped, and unmistakably real.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s how I found myself on a business-class flight to Dallas, nerves buzzing under my skin as I tried to make sense of how my life had suddenly veered into territory that felt unreal. Unique was one word for it. Unhinged might\u2019ve been another.<\/p>\n
\u201cA coin toss?\u201d the father \u2014 Richard \u2014 scoffed. \u201cYou can\u2019t be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was her final wish,\u201d Mr. Thompson replied calmly.<\/p>\n
He pulled a silver coin from his pocket and held it up, letting it catch the light. My stomach flipped as he positioned it on his thumb.<\/p>\n

The room went silent. Even Dean stopped fidgeting.<\/p>\n
