Maggie Dinatto would never forget the first time she held her daughter, Alice. After twelve years of heartbreak, endless miscarriages, and dashed hopes, she finally had her miracle baby in her arms. Nothing, she thought, could ever rival that moment of joy.<\/p>\n

Until six years later, in a hotel pool in Miami, she saw her daughter\u2019s carbon copy.<\/p>\n

The Dinattos had flown from Montana to Florida for a much-needed vacation, ending with Alice\u2019s sixth birthday at Disney World. Alice, thrilled by the beach and the sunshine, spent her days splashing in the kiddie pool while Maggie lounged nearby, reading and stealing glances at her daughter\u2019s laughter.<\/p>\n

Alice quickly befriended another little girl, Kelly. The similarities between them were uncanny. Same blond hair, same mischievous blue eyes, even the same favorite flavors of ice cream. Alice begged her mother to braid her hair like Kelly\u2019s so they could be \u201cexactly alike, like in The Parent Trap<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, with fresh braids, Alice ran to the pool calling out for Kelly. When the girl turned, Maggie froze. The resemblance wasn\u2019t just striking\u2014it was identical. She stumbled forward, her pulse racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlice, bring your friend here,\u201d she said, forcing her voice steady. The two little girls bounded over, hand in hand, grinning like mirror reflections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your name, sweetheart?\u201d Maggie asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cKelly,\u201d the girl answered with a dimpled smile. Maggie\u2019s stomach dropped. Every freckle, every tilt of her head echoed Alice exactly.<\/p>\n

Alice, oblivious, squealed, \u201cMom, can Kelly come to my birthday in Orlando? It\u2019s on June 23\u2014I\u2019ll be six!\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly gasped. \u201cThat\u2019s my birthday too!\u201d She darted toward her mother by the pool. \u201cMom! Alice and I have the same birthday!\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s magazine slipped from her hands. Her face drained of color as she stood and approached Maggie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Jana Hartley,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cKelly\u2019s mother. I\u2026 didn\u2019t realize\u2026 They don\u2019t usually separate twins.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maggie\u2019s heart stuttered. \u201cTwins? That\u2019s impossible. Alice is an only child. I gave birth to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jana looked stricken. \u201cI thought\u2026 You must have adopted her, just like I adopted Kelly\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Furious, Maggie dragged Alice back to their suite. When Fred returned from work that evening, she burst into tears, recounting Jana\u2019s words. \u201cCan you believe that woman? Saying Alice is adopted right in front of her? I want to sue her for slander!\u201d<\/p>\n

But Fred didn\u2019t answer. His face had gone ashen, his hands trembling.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh God,\u201d he whispered, sinking into a chair. \u201cShe lived.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe what<\/em>?\u201d Maggie asked, stunned.<\/p>\n

Fred buried his face in his hands. \u201cMaggie\u2026 when you were eight months pregnant, they suspected a heart murmur. Do you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but the scan showed Alice was fine!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was fine,\u201d Fred said hoarsely. \u201cBut\u2026 there was another baby. A twin. She was half Alice\u2019s size. They called it Twin-to-Twin Transfer Syndrome. One baby thrives\u2026 the other starves. The doctors said she had less than a ten percent chance to survive, and even if she did, she would have severe disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maggie\u2019s knees buckled. \u201cNo\u2026 no, that\u2019s not true. Why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were already fragile,\u201d Fred whispered. \u201cI couldn\u2019t watch you suffer again. They did a C-section. I signed the papers. They made her a ward of the state. Everyone thought she wouldn\u2019t live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maggie\u2019s scream echoed through the suite. \u201cShe\u2019s not dead, Fred! She\u2019s alive\u2014she\u2019s beautiful\u2014and you STOLE her from me!\u201d<\/p>\n

It took hours for Maggie\u2019s sobs to quiet. Fred\u2019s decision had been meant to protect her, but it had cost them six years of their daughter\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

The next day, Maggie and Fred met with Jana and her husband Dan. They had raised Kelly after doctors insisted she wouldn\u2019t survive. They loved her as their own. Taking her away was impossible\u2014but how could they keep the twins apart?<\/p>\n

After long discussions, the parents found a solution. Jana suggested, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we move near each other? Somewhere in between Texas and Montana, by the coast. If the girls grow up together, they\u2019ll never feel the loss.\u201d<\/p>\n
