An ear-splitting wail echoed through the house as Walter entered from the garage. The sound cut straight through him\u2014sharp, desperate, relentless. In the kitchen, his wife Abby sat slumped at the table, her face streaked with tears. One look told him Logan\u2019s cries had pushed her to the edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, honey,\u201d Walter said softly, wrapping his arms around her from behind. \u201cHow long has he been crying like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve tried everything, Walter!\u201d Abby sobbed. \u201cHe\u2019s been fed, changed, bathed, burped\u2014I even took his temperature! I don\u2019t know what to do anymore. He just won\u2019t stop crying!\u201d<\/p>\n

Becoming parents a month ago had turned their lives upside down. Sleepless nights, constant worry, and an overwhelming sense of responsibility filled every day. But nothing unsettled Walter more than Logan\u2019s cries. They stirred something primal in him\u2014a fear he couldn\u2019t shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on,\u201d he said gently. \u201cWe\u2019ll figure this out together.\u201d<\/p>\n

They walked down the hall to Logan\u2019s room. Walter forced a reassuring smile as he approached the crib, expecting to find their son red-faced and flailing.<\/p>\n

Instead, the crib was empty.<\/p>\n

In its place sat a small dictaphone and a folded note.<\/p>\n

Confused, Walter reached out and pressed the stop button. Instantly, Logan\u2019s crying ceased.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d Abby asked from behind him.<\/p>\n

Walter didn\u2019t answer. His eyes were locked on the note in his trembling hand. He felt the room spin as Abby snatched it away and read aloud, her voice breaking with every word.<\/p>\n

\u201cI warned you that you\u2019d regret being rude to me.<\/p>\n

If you want to see your baby again, leave $200,000 in the luggage storage lockers near the pier.<\/p>\n

If you go to the police, you\u2019ll never see him again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God\u2026\u201d Abby gasped. \u201cWhat does this mean? Were you rude to someone? Was I? Who would kidnap Logan?\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter\u2019s mind raced back to the maternity hospital. He remembered the janitor he\u2019d lashed out at\u2014the man whose broom he\u2019d tripped over while carrying a bear-shaped flower pot for Abby. The pot shattered, and so did Walter\u2019s temper.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll regret it,\u201d the janitor had warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to go to the police,\u201d Walter said firmly. \u201cIt has to be him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe note says we can\u2019t!\u201d Abby cried. \u201cIf we go to the police, we\u2019ll never see Logan again. We should just pay!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know he\u2019ll give Logan back,\u201d Walter argued. \u201cAnd he\u2019s just a janitor. He wouldn\u2019t know if we went to the police. They can arrest him and bring our son home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abby hesitated, then nodded.<\/p>\n

They parked outside the police station\u2014but before they could get out, Walter\u2019s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n

This is your first and last warning. If you enter that police station, your kid\u2019s going into the bay. Get the money.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abby nearly fainted.<\/p>\n

There were too many people around to spot anyone watching them. Terrified, Walter abandoned the plan to go inside. The only option left was to play along.<\/p>\n

He tried to drive to the bank, but Abby grew violently ill. She vomited once, then again, barely able to sit upright.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to take you home first,\u201d Walter said, guilt flooding his chest. \u201cPlease don\u2019t hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFine,\u201d Abby whispered through tears. \u201cBut Walter\u2026 does that kidnapper even know how to take care of a newborn?\u201d<\/p>\n

That question haunted him all the way home\u2014and all the way to the bank afterward.<\/p>\n

Walter withdrew the money, drove to the pier, and placed it inside the designated locker. He stayed nearby, heart pounding, watching the crowd.<\/p>\n

Soon enough, he spotted the janitor. The man opened the locker and removed the bag\u2014but before Walter could confront him, a tourist group blocked his view. By the time they passed, the janitor was gone.<\/p>\n

Moments later, Walter saw him crossing the street with the bag. He followed.<\/p>\n

The man wound through streets, restaurants, and museums before entering a bus station and stopping at another set of lockers. He placed the bag inside.<\/p>\n

Walter slammed him against the lockers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is my son?\u201d he roared. \u201cI did everything you asked!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI swear, I don\u2019t know!\u201d the man cried. \u201cSomeone paid me $100 to move the bag. I\u2019ve got kids of my own\u2014I\u2019d never hurt a child!\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter opened the locker. It was empty.<\/p>\n

Someone had cut a hole through the back.<\/p>\n

Defeated, Walter returned home\u2014only to find Abby gone. Her clothes, toiletries, even her hand lotion had vanished.<\/p>\n

And suddenly, the truth hit him like a punch to the chest.<\/p>\n

Abby hadn\u2019t been kidnapped.<\/p>\n

She was<\/em> the kidnapper.<\/p>\n

The only comfort Walter had was knowing the ransom money was fake.<\/p>\n

He rushed to the maternity hospital and bribed a doctor to make a phone call.<\/p>\n

When Abby arrived later that day with Logan\u2014escorted by Walter\u2019s brother James\u2014the police were waiting.<\/p>\n

Abby screamed. James looked at the floor.<\/p>\n

Walter held his son again, relief flooding through him\u2014until Abby spat one final cruelty.<\/p>\n

\u201cLogan isn\u2019t even yours!\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter froze. Then he straightened.<\/p>\n
