Losing him hit all of us hard, but Mom? She was gutted. Thirty-two years of marriage, and then\u2014just silence. Watching her try to navigate life without her best friend broke my heart.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why my brother Brian and I made a silent pact:
She would never feel alone.<\/p>\n

Every Tuesday after work, I stopped by her house. She lived just eight minutes away, so it was easy to swing by with groceries or help with anything she needed.
Brian took Fridays. Toolbox in hand, he\u2019d fix squeaky hinges or replace burnt-out bulbs.
If she called, we could both be there within minutes.<\/p>\n

But Sundays were sacred.<\/p>\n

Every Sunday, Mom made dinner for all of us.
My husband and kids. Brian\u2019s wife and their children. Eight people crowded around the same kitchen table where Brian and I once ate cereal before school.<\/p>\n

Her roast chicken was the star.
An heirloom recipe passed down from her mother\u2014garlic, rosemary, and her famous \u201csecret ingredient.\u201d
When I asked her once, she just smiled:
\u201cThat\u2019s love. You can\u2019t buy it at the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every Sunday morning, her text popped up in our family group chat like clockwork:
\u201cDinner at 6. Bring tupperware.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It meant: Come hungry. Leave full. Take memories.<\/p>\n

So when I opened my phone that Sunday and saw something different, my heart skipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t come today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

No emoji. No explanation. Just a period at the end\u2014like a slammed door.
It didn\u2019t feel like her.<\/p>\n

I texted back: \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/strong>
The message was marked \u201cread.\u201d No reply.<\/p>\n

My hands started shaking. Then a text from Brian lit up the screen:

I knocked.
\u201cMom! It\u2019s Alice!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n

I knocked harder. \u201cMom, please open up!\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands trembled as I fished out the spare key she\u2019d given me years ago. I unlocked the door, stepped inside\u2014and froze.<\/p>\n

The man slowly turned.<\/p>\n

And I screamed.<\/p>\n

It was Dad. Or\u2014someone who looked exactly<\/em> like him.
Same eyes. Same mouth. Same weary kindness.<\/p>\n

But something was off. The face was older, etched with deeper lines.<\/p>\n

Mom finally turned, tears streaming down her cheeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is\u2026\u201d she began, voice shaking. \u201cThis is your uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian and I exchanged horrified looks.
\u201cDad didn\u2019t have a brother,\u201d I said. \u201cYou told us he was an only child.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom nodded. \u201cWe told you that. But it wasn\u2019t true.\u201d<\/p>\n

She sat down slowly. Her voice trembled as she began telling the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met James first,\u201d she said, looking at the man.
\u201cYour father\u2019s twin. I met him before I ever met your dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even his name felt foreign in our kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames was wild. A dreamer. Always talking about traveling the world. And I fell for him. Hard.\u201d
She paused. \u201cThen one day, he vanished. No note. No goodbye. Just gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian leaned forward. \u201cSo then\u2026 you met Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father was always there. Quiet, loyal, kind. He picked up the pieces James left behind.\u201d
Her voice cracked. \u201cAnd we built a life. But during a rough patch, years later\u2026 I made a mistake. I told your father the truth\u2014that I had loved James first. That, at first, I married out of pain, not love.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned. \u201cWhy are you telling us this now?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I also told him,\u201d she said, \u201cthat only after you were born did I truly fall in love. Your father became my everything. My soulmate. Not James.\u201d<\/p>\n

James finally spoke. His voice was so much like Dad\u2019s, it made my skin crawl.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father forgave her,\u201d he said. \u201cBut he never forgave me. He cut me off completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd asked me to do the same,\u201d Mom added. \u201cAnd I did. For 30 years, we kept James a secret. Until last week\u2026 when he showed up on my doorstep.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at James. \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI came to apologize,\u201d he said. \u201cTo ask for forgiveness. And\u2026 maybe a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brian shot up. \u201cA second chance? You vanished for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

He folded it neatly and set it on the table.<\/p>\n

No shouting. No argument.<\/p>\n

We just asked him to leave.<\/p>\n

And he did.<\/p>\n

When the door closed behind him, Mom collapsed on the couch and sobbed.<\/p>\n
