Days ago, at a family reunion, my boyfriend suddenly stood up and said:
\u201cCan we stop pretending like she\u2019s the problem?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It went dead silent. You could hear my aunt pouring wine like a waterfall.
My heart was racing. I didn\u2019t expect him to say anything. I thought he\u2019d sit through it like I always had, quietly swallowing the shame while Mom painted me as some deranged monster.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not fat,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s recovering from an eating disorder. She\u2019s not jobless\u2014she quit a job that made her cry in the bathroom every day. She\u2019s not homeless\u2014she left a house that was emotionally unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n
