I planned a party at home with her friends\u2014nothing fancy, just cupcakes, games, a magician, and a bouncy castle in the backyard. It was meant to be small but full of love.<\/p>\n
But there was a problem.<\/p>\n
Chloe.<\/p>\n
Chloe is in Lily\u2019s class. She\u2019s a nice girl, but she has rich parents. Really rich. They live in a big house, drive shiny cars, and seem to know all the right people. And wouldn\u2019t you know it? Chloe has the same birthday as Lily.<\/p>\n
Lily was worried about this.
\u201cMom, what if everyone goes to Chloe\u2019s party and doesn\u2019t come to mine?\u201d she asked one night as I tucked her in.<\/p>\n

Her husband had just joined us and laughed.
\u201cYou might as well cancel yours,\u201d he added smugly. \u201cNo one\u2019s going to miss this one. It\u2019ll be the talk of the school.\u201d<\/p>\n
My heart sank. I felt humiliated standing there as they looked down on me. I knew my small party couldn\u2019t compete. And deep down, I feared every child would choose Chloe\u2019s glittering spectacle.<\/p>\n
Still, I went ahead with Lily\u2019s party. Even if no one came, I wanted her to feel celebrated. I hung decorations, baked cupcakes from scratch, set up the bouncy castle, and hired a magician. It wasn\u2019t extravagant\u2014but it was made with love.<\/p>\n
The morning of the party, Lily twirled in her favorite pink dress, her eyes shining.

\u201cThey\u2019ll love it,\u201d I said, forcing a smile.<\/p>\n

Time crawled by. The music played softly in the background. The cupcakes sat untouched. Every time the doorbell didn\u2019t ring, my chest tightened. I kept glancing at the clock, hoping, praying.<\/p>\n
Lily finally sat down on the couch.

Lily clasped her hands in her lap, staring at the door.

I sat there, stunned.

\u201cWell,\u201d Sarah said, \u201ca lot of us feel terrible for skipping Lily\u2019s party. We\u2019re packing up and heading to you now. The kids really want to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re coming?\u201d I whispered, looking at Lily.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe there in 15,\u201d she said, and hung up.<\/p>\n
Exactly fifteen minutes later, cars lined the street.<\/p>\n
Lily jumped up when she heard the doorbell.
\u201cThey\u2019re here, Mom! They\u2019re really here!\u201d<\/p>\n
When I opened the door, parents and kids flooded in with gifts, snacks, and embarrassed smiles.<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry we\u2019re late,\u201d Sarah said gently. \u201cLooks like we came to the right place after all.\u201d<\/p>\n
The house came alive. Laughter echoed through the rooms. The magician finally had an audience\u2014and he was wonderful. Kids devoured cupcakes, bounced outside, and screamed with joy.<\/p>\n
Lily ran from friend to friend, glowing.<\/p>\n
