Bedsheets \u2014 snow-white, hotel crisp
Kitchen spotless, no crumbs on counters
Tea set polished every Sunday
Herbs by the window \u2014 fresh, never dried<\/p>\n

I was always terrified I\u2019d forget something. A missing ingredient, a wrinkled napkin \u2014 any tiny flaw that might disappoint him. So I made small recordings all the time.<\/p>\n

Tiny commands I played back at night like bedtime stories for obedient wives. Sometimes, I replayed those recordings just to remind myself that at least I was still needed by my husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cForty.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man rubbed his neck. \u201cI\u2019m Mark.\u201d
\u201cRachel.\u201d
\u201cNice to meet you, Rachel. I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced at the tiny black recorder peeking out from my sleeve. \u201cWhy are you even recording this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the divorce,\u201d I whispered. \u201cI want his promises on tape. Lies, dates, faces. All of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood,\u201d he said. \u201cJudges love the truth when it\u2019s got a timestamp.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him. \u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes flicked back to his daughter giggling in my husband\u2019s lap.
\u201cProof she\u2019s not some innocent princess. Her mother thinks I\u2019m controlling. Let her see who our daughter really skips class for.\u201d<\/p>\n

We both laughed \u2014 the kind of laugh that hurts.<\/p>\n
