Mr. Adams had been living in his small two-bedroom house for many years. His dear wife had passed away some time ago, and his children lived on the other side of the country. It could get lonely, but his neighborhood was amazing.<\/p>\n

He was surrounded by caring families and warm, familiar faces\u2014especially the neighbors next door. They often waved to him, brought over leftovers, and checked in when they hadn\u2019t seen him outside for a few days. Unfortunately, they were moving away soon because they needed more space for their growing family.<\/p>\n

Mr. Adams wished them all the best and hoped that whoever filled the vacancy would be just as kind. Unfortunately, his prayers were not answered. A group of young college students moved into the house a few weeks later.<\/p>\n

They couldn\u2019t be older than eighteen, which meant fresh out of high school. Mr. Adams dreaded the situation but told himself to stay optimistic. Maybe they were quiet students. Maybe they respected the neighborhood.<\/p>\n

Sadly, he was wrong. As soon as they finished moving their belongings in, the teenagers started throwing parties. Cars lined the street. Music blared. Dozens of unfamiliar faces spilled onto lawns and sidewalks. They didn\u2019t turn off their speakers until nearly 5 a.m. on a Monday.<\/p>\n

Mr. Adams had no idea what to do. The next morning, as he watered his plants with heavy eyes and a pounding head, he spotted Linda Shaw walking toward him. She lived across the street with her husband and two preschool-aged children.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, Mr. Adams!\u201d she greeted, though her tired smile gave her away.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, Linda. How was your night?\u201d he asked gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, absolutely terrible. I didn\u2019t sleep at all. My kids woke up around 2 a.m. and didn\u2019t go back to bed until the music stopped. We\u2019ve never had problems like this before,\u201d she said with a sigh.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what you mean. It was a nightmare for me too,\u201d Mr. Adams replied. \u201cI thought about calling the police, but I didn\u2019t know if that was the right move.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI almost did, but I didn\u2019t want to cause trouble if it was just their first night,\u201d Linda said. \u201cStill\u2026 this can\u2019t keep happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWould the HOA help?\u201d Mr. Adams asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe. Though I heard they have connections,\u201d Linda replied quietly. \u201cOne of their parents might be on the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Adams nodded grimly. After she left, he resolved that if the noise continued, he would speak to them himself.<\/p>\n

That resolve lasted exactly one day.<\/p>\n

The following night, another party erupted\u2014louder than the first. By midnight, Mr. Adams\u2019 nerves were shot. He walked over and knocked on the door.<\/p>\n

A young man opened it, scowling.
\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m your next-door neighbor,\u201d Mr. Adams said calmly. \u201cI need to ask you to keep the music down. This is a quiet neighborhood with families and older residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo? That\u2019s not my problem,\u201d the boy sneered. \u201cI pay rent. I can do what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this continues, I\u2019ll have to call the police,\u201d Mr. Adams said, keeping his voice steady.<\/p>\n

The boy laughed. \u201cGo ahead. My dad\u2019s the sheriff. Nothing will happen. Now beat it, old man. If you don\u2019t like noise, move to a nursing home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The door slammed shut.<\/p>\n

Mr. Adams stood there, stunned. He still called the police\u2014but no one came. The music raged until nearly 4 a.m.<\/p>\n

The next morning, he and Linda spoke again. She confirmed the rumors. The HOA was protecting them. Complaints were being ignored. Still, the neighborhood didn\u2019t give up. Signatures were collected. A formal complaint was filed with the local council.<\/p>\n

And still\u2026 the parties continued.<\/p>\n

Then came the storm.<\/p>\n

Rain poured down in sheets. Thunder shook the windows. Lightning split the sky. Yet the house next door was still blasting music, their speakers sitting openly on the porch.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, a deafening crack echoed through the air. The music cut out instantly. The entire house went dark.<\/p>\n

Mr. Adams peered through his window and saw the teens stumbling outside in confusion. He let out a small laugh\u2014not out of cruelty, but relief. For the first time in weeks, the night was silent.<\/p>\n
