That\u2019s exactly where I found myself last weekend, watching my birthday celebration crumble because of my sister\u2019s impossible expectations.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Sandra, and my sister Caroline has always been\u2026 complicated. She doesn\u2019t make direct requests; she just drops hints, expecting everyone to read her mind.<\/p>\n

When she wants the windows open, she won\u2019t say so\u2014she\u2019ll sigh dramatically and mumble, \u201cGoodness, the air feels so stuffy today!\u201d<\/em>
If she wants the AC on, she\u2019ll keep fanning herself, saying, \u201cIsn\u2019t it warm in here?\u201d<\/em> but when asked directly, she\u2019ll reply, \u201cOh no, I\u2019m fine! But if you\u2019re hot, go ahead.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve grown used to it, but nothing prepared me for what happened at Rosewood Bistro that night.<\/p>\n

Mom picked the place\u2014it was warm and charming, with candlelight flickering across the tables. I\u2019d imagined laughter, clinking glasses, and happy toasts. Instead, I found myself trapped in another one of Caroline\u2019s performances.<\/p>\n

She sat across from me, fidgeting with her napkin, eyes darting to the bar as if hypnotized.
\u201cWow, that couple over there sure looks like they\u2019re enjoying their evening,\u201d she said, nodding toward a pair sharing cocktails.<\/p>\n

My jaw dropped. \u201cBut you told the waitress you didn\u2019t want anything!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t have had to ask! You\u2019re my family. You should\u2019ve just known.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence after that was deafening. Even the couple at the next table stopped eating.<\/p>\n

Liam\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cSo you\u2019re mad because we didn\u2019t order you something you said you didn\u2019t want<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Caroline folded her arms. \u201cExactly. You\u2019re so focused on yourselves you can\u2019t see when someone needs help.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could feel my birthday slipping away. My careful makeup felt like a mask, my new dress suddenly suffocating.
\u201cCaroline, this is ridiculous,\u201d I said, my voice shaking with anger. \u201cYou\u2019re 23. If you want a drink, order one. Don\u2019t expect us to read your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
