My husband and I never wanted children. We were content\u2014fulfilled in our careers, our travels, and each other. But everything changed when I turned 40.<\/p>\n

That was when my mother sat me down and, in her usual cold yet calculating tone, issued an ultimatum: \u201cGive me a grandchild or be written out of the will.\u201d Her words hit like a punch to the chest. I wasn\u2019t chasing her money\u2014I never had. But deep down, some part of me still yearned for her approval. I always had.<\/p>\n

So, we had a daughter. And true to form, my mother inserted herself into every detail of her upbringing. She insisted on choosing her name, her school, even what lullabies we played. By the time my daughter was three, she spent more time with my mother than she did with me. And honestly? I let it happen. I told myself it was for the best. That I wasn\u2019t maternal. That she needed structure. That this was love\u2014just not in the way I expected.<\/p>\n

Fifteen years later, my mother died.<\/p>\n

At the house, I found her jewelry box nearly empty. Her most cherished pieces\u2014heirlooms passed down for generations\u2014were gone. Inside, she\u2019d left a single note, scribbled in shaky handwriting:<\/p>\n
