The Day We Took Back Our Family<\/strong><\/p>\n

In our house, our workaholic dad was king and our mom his servant. Us kids were practically ghosts. Until the day we decided to open Dad\u2019s eyes with a risky plan, not knowing how it would end up changing everything.<\/p>\n

Ever felt invisible in your own home? Like the person you\u2019re supposed to look up to doesn\u2019t even see you? That was my life. I\u2019m Irene, and this is the story of how my brother and I forced our dad to face the truth\u2014and how it saved our family.<\/p>\n

It was a typical Tuesday evening. I sat at the kitchen table, math homework spread out before me, while my younger brother Josh sprawled on the living room rug, devouring a comic book. The clock ticked toward 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

Right on cue, the front door creaked open. Dad trudged in, briefcase in hand, tie loosened, exhaustion etched across his face. Without even looking at us, he called, \u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n

I perked up, hoping\u2014just maybe\u2014for a smile, a \u201cHow was your day?\u201d But no.<\/p>\n

Instead, he bellowed, \u201cMariam! Where\u2019s my dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom rushed from the laundry room, hair messy, hands full of socks. \u201cComing, Carl. Just finishing up here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad grunted, kicked off his shoes, and flopped onto the couch. Seconds later, the screech of virtual tires filled the room as he lost himself in his racing game.<\/p>\n

Josh glanced at me, rolling his eyes. I forced a thin smile. This was normal, but it didn\u2019t hurt any less.<\/p>\n

Mom darted past again, laundry basket on her hip. \u201cDinner will be ready in ten minutes, Carl.\u201d<\/p>\n

No response. Just more cursing at the game.<\/p>\n

I sighed. Another night in the Thompson household\u2014Dad the king, Mom the servant, and us, the forgotten extras.<\/p>\n

The next evening, things snapped. Dad stormed into the kitchen, holding up a car magazine. \u201cMariam! Why is this dusty? Don\u2019t you clean around here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom froze, her voice small. \u201cI\u2014I\u2019ve been busy with work\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBusy?\u201d he barked. \u201cI work too, you know. Is it too much to ask for a clean house?\u201d<\/p>\n

That was it. My blood boiled. Mom worked just as much as Dad, but also carried the weight of everything at home. Meanwhile, he ate, complained, played games, and slept.<\/p>\n

I stormed into the kitchen, where Josh was munching chips. \u201cWe need to do something,\u201d I hissed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout what?\u201d he asked cautiously.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout Dad. This can\u2019t go on. He treats Mom like dirt and ignores us. We need to show him what it feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh\u2019s grin was slow and mischievous. \u201cNow you\u2019re talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

We whispered our plan late into the night. Risky? Absolutely. But it was the only way.<\/p>\n

The next day, we convinced Mom to go to the spa. \u201cTake the day off, please,\u201d I begged. \u201cWe\u2019ll handle things.\u201d She hesitated, then agreed, clearly needing the break.<\/p>\n

At 6 p.m., Josh and I dressed in Dad\u2019s oversized shirts and ties, nearly drowning in the fabric.<\/p>\n

\u201cReady?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

Josh straightened his too-big tie. \u201cShowtime.\u201d<\/p>\n

The door opened. Dad stepped in, briefcase in hand, and froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the\u2014why are you wearing my clothes?\u201d<\/p>\n

I crossed my arms. \u201cWhere\u2019s my dinner?\u201d I demanded, mimicking his harsh tone.<\/p>\n

Josh, lounging on the couch with a magazine, added casually, \u201cAnd don\u2019t forget to clean up the PlayStation when you\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad blinked. \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I ignored him, pretending to play his game. \u201cHey, I\u2019m busy. Don\u2019t bother me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh smirked. \u201cYeah, go ask Mom. Isn\u2019t that what you always say?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad\u2019s face shifted from confusion to anger, then something else. His voice cracked. \u201cIs this\u2026 is this how you see me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The act fell away. My throat tightened, but I held his gaze. \u201cYes. This is exactly how you treat us. You don\u2019t see us, Dad. You don\u2019t appreciate Mom. She works just as hard as you, but you act like she\u2019s your servant. And we\u2026 we don\u2019t even exist to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh\u2019s voice trembled, but he spoke firmly. \u201cWe just want you to care. About her. About us.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a long moment, silence hung heavy in the room. Dad\u2019s shoulders sagged. His eyes shimmered, and for once, he didn\u2019t look like a king on a throne\u2014he looked like a man ashamed of himself.<\/p>\n

The front door creaked again. Mom walked in, refreshed from her spa day. She froze, staring at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad turned to her, tears spilling down his cheeks. \u201cI\u2026 I\u2019ve been awful, Mariam. A terrible husband and father. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, to our shock, he marched into the kitchen. The clatter of pots and pans filled the air.<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cCarl? What are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking dinner!\u201d he called, voice shaky but determined. \u201cSit down. All of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

We sat, stunned, as the smell of sizzling onions filled the room. When Dad reappeared, balancing a pot of stew, it was almost surreal. He served us with trembling hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he whispered. \u201cFor everything. I don\u2019t want to be that man anymore. Please, let me try to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n

We ate together, Dad actually asking us about school, listening for once.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d he said cautiously, \u201chow\u2019s it going for you two?\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked, caught off guard. \u201cUm\u2026 I\u2019ve got a big history test coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded earnestly. \u201cMaybe I can help you study?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled, unsure but hopeful. \u201cYeah. That\u2019d be\u2026 great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh grinned. \u201cAnd maybe after that, you\u2019ll finally play games with us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad laughed, a sound we hadn\u2019t heard in years. \u201cDeal. But first\u2014we clean up together.\u201d<\/p>\n
