Locked in the Basement \u2013 And What I Did Next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I should have just said no from the start. Not just when Ethan brought up the idea of his friends coming over for dinner. I mean way before that\u2014when I first realized how awful they were. I never outright said that I didn\u2019t hate them, but let\u2019s be honest: I think I made it pretty clear.<\/p>\n

But my husband, Ethan? He\u2019s so different from these guys. At 35, he\u2019s a successful manager at a tech company. For reasons I will never understand, he\u2019s still best friends with the same guys he went to high school with. They\u2019re loud, crude, and completely unlike Ethan\u2014the very picture of what he left behind when he built a better life.<\/p>\n

Except, apparently, his loyalty to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cDani, it\u2019s just one game,\u201d he said that night, sitting in the kitchen with a hopeful grin. \u201cThe guys really want to watch it here. They\u2019re dying to see our new TV setup. It\u2019ll be fun!\u201d<\/p>\n

I sighed, trying to keep calm. I could already see the night unfolding like a bad rerun. They\u2019d take over our home, beer bottles on the counters, their inappropriate comments filling every conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan, you know how I feel about them. Every single time they come over, it\u2019s like our house turns into a frat house. I\u2019m not cleaning up after them again. It\u2019s not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband\u2019s face dropped. A flicker of wounded pride crossed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just one night, Danielle. I don\u2019t get to see them very often because of work. Come on, you can hang out upstairs or something. Don\u2019t be like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cThey\u2019re not coming here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease?\u201d he asked, pouting. \u201cI promise I\u2019ll do all the cleaning before and after. You won\u2019t have to do a thing. Why don\u2019t you invite your girls over? You guys can use the hot tub and catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t say anything. And Ethan didn\u2019t push it. He just turned back to his pasta, chewing in silence.<\/p>\n

I should have seen what was coming.<\/p>\n

A few days later, it happened.<\/p>\n

It was Saturday, the night of the big game, but Ethan hadn\u2019t mentioned it once. In fact, he was the perfect husband\u2014he came grocery shopping with me, even stopped to get me flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want for dinner tonight?\u201d he asked as we drove home.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything that doesn\u2019t involve me cooking,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeal,\u201d Ethan chuckled. \u201cI ordered fried chicken and fries for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds incredible,\u201d I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think you could grab the six-pack of beer from the basement fridge?\u201d he asked later.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure,\u201d I said, blowing on my freshly painted nails.<\/p>\n

I called out to him as I walked down the stairs. \u201cPay attention for the delivery guy!\u201d<\/p>\n

He waved me off, barely glancing at me.<\/p>\n

The basement was dim and cold, as usual. I grabbed the six-pack from the fridge, already thinking about how cozy our evening would be. Then, the door slammed.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan?\u201d I called, confused.<\/p>\n

I tried the handle. It didn\u2019t budge.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan! This isn\u2019t funny!\u201d<\/p>\n

No answer.<\/p>\n

I could hear muffled voices upstairs\u2014laughter, cheering, the unmistakable sound of basketball commentary on the TV. My stomach turned. His friends were here. He\u2019d brought them over after I told him no.<\/p>\n

And he had locked me in the basement.<\/p>\n

Minutes stretched into an hour. I banged on the door, screamed his name, tried everything. Nothing. He was up there, with his buddies, drinking beer and watching the game while I sat in the dark.<\/p>\n

When the door finally opened, Ethan stood there with a fake laugh. \u201cOh, Dani! There you are! I didn\u2019t know you were down here. Must have locked it by accident. You know, it\u2019s a habit to keep the basement door locked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAn accident?\u201d I repeated, my voice cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I didn\u2019t hear you,\u201d he grinned, stepping aside.<\/p>\n

Beer bottles littered the living room. Empty chip packets on the table. The fried chicken gone. The game over. His friends still lounging on our couch.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, babe,\u201d Ethan said. \u201cThe chicken\u2019s finished. But I can make you a toasted cheese sandwich?\u201d<\/p>\n

I brushed past him and went upstairs. I wasn\u2019t going to give him the satisfaction of a fight. Not yet.<\/p>\n

A few nights later, after Ethan had passed out in bed, I crept downstairs. Quietly, I pulled out the small tank my brother had given me earlier. Inside were two harmless snakes\u2014Ethan\u2019s biggest phobia.<\/p>\n

When I told my brother what Ethan had done, he hadn\u2019t hesitated. \u201cMy babies will get the job done, Sis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I cracked open the bedroom door and slipped the snakes inside. They slithered across the carpet, disappearing into the dark. Then, I locked the door from the outside.<\/p>\n

Poetic.<\/p>\n

I settled on the couch downstairs with a blanket and called Ethan\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d he muttered, groggy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might want to wake up,\u201d I said calmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about? Where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something in the room with you. A couple of things, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d Ethan\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n

I heard a thud, then a sharp gasp. \u201cOh my God! Danielle! Get me out of here! Danielle, what the hell is in here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He was thrashing around, terrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cDanielle!\u201d he screamed. \u201cPlease! I\u2019m so sorry. I shouldn\u2019t have done that! Please get me out!\u201d<\/p>\n

I let him sweat. For two full hours, I listened to him beg.<\/p>\n

Finally, I went upstairs and opened the door. Ethan stood in the middle of the bed, pale, trembling.<\/p>\n
