McStay \u201cdied quietly in his sleep just an hour after sharing a locket Sunday lunch with my brother and I\u201d on May 11, his son Darius McStay shared with PEOPLE. The actor died of heart failure.<\/p>\n

McStay\u2019s rise to fame began with the role of Sergeant Perryman on the ITV detective series No Hiding Place, on which he appeared in over 80 episodes.<\/p>\n
He also starred in two episodes of BBC\u2019s Doctor Who, playing the role of Derek Moberley.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sort of fans that you get on a show like Doctor Who are your friends. They want to like you, they want to like the show. It\u2019s a great feeling,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cIt\u2019s a great bunch of people to be a part of in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n
The late star also landed roles in films including Robbery in 1967 and The Stick Up in 1977.<\/p>\n
On the small screen, he also appeared on The Black Arrow, Park Ranger, Spy at Evening, EastEnders and Ted and Alice.<\/p>\n
He was also in consideration to replace George Lazenby as James Bond before Sean Connery reprised the role, \u201cbut not before enjoying a day being congratulated by the national press, who had mistakenly thought he had been awarded the part,\u201d according to his obituary.<\/p>\n
During the podcast appearance, McStay reflected on having staying power in the entertainment industry, saying, \u201cYou have to want to do it. I\u2019ve always wanted to do it. And I had some good friends along the way that helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n
McStay\u2019s final on-camera appearance came in ITV soap Coronation Street, on which he took over the role of Alan Hoyle from John Woodvine in 2011. The role allowed him to reunite with his friend Johnny Briggs,
