They drove to a small diner on the edge of town\u2014the one Grandpa used to take us to every Sunday after church. The red vinyl booths were cracked in the corners. The bell above the door still jingled too loudly. The smell of burnt coffee and maple syrup hung in the air like it had decades ago.<\/p>\n

I watched from across the street, my pulse hammering in my ears.<\/p>\n

Noah stepped out of his car first. He walked around to Nana\u2019s side and opened her door like he always did for me. He offered his arm. She took it, smiling up at him with a softness that felt\u2026 intimate.<\/p>\n

Too intimate.<\/p>\n

Inside, he pulled out her chair. He leaned in when she spoke. At one point, she reached across the table and rested her hand over his.<\/p>\n

My stomach twisted.<\/p>\n

A thousand ugly thoughts rushed in at once.
Was this why he\u2019d been \u201cworking late\u201d every Thursday?
Why he\u2019d grown so quiet whenever I mentioned Nana lately?
Why he\u2019d brushed off my offer to visit her together?<\/p>\n

I felt foolish. Small. Betrayed.<\/p>\n

I moved closer to the window, anger battling heartbreak in my chest. I wasn\u2019t ready for confrontation\u2014but I wasn\u2019t ready to walk away either.<\/p>\n

Then I heard her voice through the slightly cracked diner window.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe still talks about him in her sleep sometimes,\u201d Nana said softly. \u201cYour grandfather. And her parents. She misses them more than she lets on.\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

Noah\u2019s expression changed. The tension in his shoulders melted into something tender.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he replied quietly. \u201cThat\u2019s why I wanted to do this. She carries so much alone. I just\u2026 I want her to feel surrounded by love\u2014even when she doesn\u2019t realize it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to remember for you,\u201d Nana said at one point, her voice trembling. \u201cSo you don\u2019t have to carry it by yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed my hand against the cool glass.<\/p>\n

All this time, I thought something was being taken from me.<\/p>\n

Instead, something was being built around me.<\/p>\n

I stepped back before they could see me, tears blurring the neon lights into soft halos. I felt ashamed of my suspicion\u2014but overwhelmed by the depth of what I\u2019d just witnessed.<\/p>\n

Later that night, after Nana was home and tucked into bed, I told Noah what I\u2019d seen.<\/p>\n

I expected embarrassment. Maybe defensiveness.<\/p>\n

Instead, he smiled\u2014gentle, steady, sure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you,\u201d he said simply. \u201cAnd I love where you come from. The people who made you who you are\u2014they matter to me too.\u201d<\/p>\n

I broke then.<\/p>\n

Because love had shown up in a way I never expected.<\/p>\n

Not with grand gestures or dramatic declarations.<\/p>\n
