As we took off, I started feeling the warning signs of low blood sugar: dizziness, shaky hands, and a racing heart. I reached down for my emergency granola bar only to realize, in a rush to board, I\u2019d moved it to my checked bag by mistake. Panic set in. I rifled through my backpack, my hands trembling harder by the second.<\/p>\n
The mother next to me noticed. \u201cAre you okay?\u201d she asked, her voice shifting from annoyance to concern.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have type 1 diabetes,\u201d I said, trying to keep my voice steady. \u201cMy blood sugar\u2019s dropping fast. I\u2014I usually have something, but I must\u2019ve misplaced it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded, finally able to smile. \u201cI do. Thank you. You really helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n
His parents smiled too \u2014 tired but warm. \u201cWe always pack extras,\u201d his mom said. \u201cWe had no idea they\u2019d be for someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the rest of the flight, the boy was calm, occasionally peeking over to make sure I was okay. At one point, he even offered me a bite of his cookie \u201cjust in case.\u201d I politely declined, but thanked him again.<\/p>\n
When we landed, I turned to his parents and said, \u201cI\u2019ll never forget your kindness. You helped a total stranger, and it meant more than I can say.\u201d<\/p>\n
The mom smiled and said, \u201cSometimes you don\u2019t plan for the people you help. But I\u2019m glad we were here.\u201d<\/p>\n
