ISLAMABAD Sep 30 (Online): Heavy rains overnight in the northeastern United States left parts of New York under water on Friday, partially paralysing subways and airports in America\u2019s financial capital.<\/p>\n
LaGuardia airport closed down one of its terminals, with social media images showing passengers walking through water well above the tops of their shoes.<\/p>\n
Mayor Eric Adams urged people not to venture out because the streets were blocked and subway stations flooded.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are home, stay home. If you are at work or school, shelter in place for now, some of our subways are flooded and it\u2019s extremely difficult to move around the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Images from around New York showed cars half-submerged and traffic snarled, with some major roads completely blocked.<\/p>\n
Shopkeepers in flooded stores were trying to protect merchandise and push the water back into the streets.<\/p>\n
The sprawling New York subway system was also hit, with several lines closed in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Cab driver Ahmed Abdou, 50, originally from Egypt, blasted officials for struggling to cope with what he said was a regular phenomenon.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe subway in the city is terrible,\u201d he said. \u201cAll the storms, they come every year at the same time. We should anticipate it better.\u201d But Rohit Aggarwala Overall, the city\u2019s Environmental Protection Commissioner, said global warming had advanced faster than the city could act.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis changing weather pattern is the result of climate change. And the sad reality is our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can respond,\u201d Overall said.<\/p>\n
New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared an official state of emergency for the city of 8.5 million and its densely-populated suburbs, including Long Island to the east and the Hudson River valley to the north.<\/p>\n
The National Weather Service warned of flooding through late Friday with as much as two inches (5.1 centimeters) of rain falling per hour.<\/p>\n
It said total accumulation on Friday could hit seven inches (18 centimeters), warning of flash flooding in urban and poor drainage areas.<\/p>\n
At Grand Central Terminal, in the heart of Manhattan, Sue Evangelista, a 63-year-old retiree, waited five hours for a train to take her and her husband to Connecticut.<\/p>\n
But the train was canceled, leaving them and thousands more who live in the city\u2019s suburbs stranded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think once they start calling the trains, it\u2019s going to be a mad rush because now people are going to start getting out of work, and it\u2019s going to get more crowded,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The rain came from a low-pressure system along the mid-Atlantic coast, which pulls in moist air from the ocean.<\/p>\n
In September 2021 Hurricane Ida brought extensive flooding to the region, especially Brooklyn and Queens, leaving 13 people dead, many of them trapped in basement apartments.<\/p>\n
Both boroughs were hit with some of the worst flooding Friday, and residents were warned to take special care.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you live in these boroughs or in a basement apartment or flood-prone area, please make sure you have plans and are prepared to move to higher ground,\u201d urged New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol.<\/p>\n
In the subway \u2014 one of the world\u2019s largest systems with 420 stations and more than 30 lines \u2014 water poured down the steps and through the ceilings of some stations.<\/p>\n
The subway is essential to the lives of millions of city residents, but a number of lines, including in Brooklyn, were shut down because of the flooding.<\/p>\n
Hochul said it was crucial to get the subway back up and running because many children rely on it to get to and from school \u2014 to the ire of parents who wondered why schools were open in the first place on Friday, with many children who made it to their classrooms amid the downpour now stuck there.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis morning\u2019s events have made it glaringly apparent that New York City and State must improve their processes for communicating with New Yorkers about sudden and extreme weather before it happens,\u201d Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso said in a statement.<\/p>\n
