Several major football clubs announced Sunday that they had reached an agreement to establish a new mid-week competition \u2013 the Super League \u2013 despite earlier objections by UEFA, European football’s governing body.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by the newly formed league, it will be governed by its \u201cfounding clubs\u201d including AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur. In addition, another three teams are expected to join.<\/p>\n
The statement said the clubs looked forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA, the international governing body of football, although UEFA said earlier that it would take measures to “stop this cynical project,” claiming it would serve the interests of only a few clubs.<\/p>\n
The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, will serve as the Super League\u2019s first chairman, according to the statement.<\/p>\n
“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans, and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires,” he said.<\/p>\n
The competition format includes 20 participating clubs with 15 founding clubs, and there will be a mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on their performance in the earlier football season, according to the statement.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Juventus Chairman Andrea Agnelli announced that he has resigned from the UEFA executive committee and as chairman of the European Club Association (ECA), according to reports published by Italian media outlets.<\/p>\n
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter that the breakdown of the league would be “very damaging for football” and called on the clubs involved to answer to their fans and the wider football community ahead of taking further steps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
