Islamabad SEPTEMBER 14 (Online): Bill Maher to continue his show on HBO without writers as Hollywood strike continues.
\nBill Maher, the comedian and political commentator, announced he will continue his show, \u2018Real Time with Bill Maher,\u2019 on HBO despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
Maher wrote in a post on X, the social media platform that replaced Twitter, that he will resume his show without his writers or writing.
\n\u201cIt has been five months, and it is time to bring people back to work. The writers have important issues that I sympathize with, and hope they are addressed to their satisfaction, but they are not the only people with issues, problems, and concerns,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
The comedian said he hoped the strikes would end by Labor Day but noted there \u201cstill seems to be nothing happening.\u201d
\n\u201cI love my writers, I am one of them, but I\u2019m not prepared to lose an entire year and see so many below-the-line people suffer so much,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will honor the spirit of the strike by not doing a monologue, desk piece, \u2018New Rules\u2019 or editorial, the written pieces that I am so proud of on \u2018Real Time.\u2019\u201d
\nMaher said he will tell the audience upfront the show without his writers will not be \u201cas good\u201d as the normal show.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the heart of the show is an off-the-cuff panel discussion that aims to cut through predictable partisanship, and that will continue. The show will not disappoint,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
The strike by members of the 11,000-member Writers Guild of America (WGA) started in May after failed contract negotiations with the studio chiefs of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
\nThe strike is the longest strike in WGA history and has halted TV and film productions in Hollywood for more than 100 days.<\/p>\n
SAG-AFTRA, the largest union for Hollywood actors, joined the strike two months later in July after failing to reach an agreement with film studios. The first dual strike since 1960.<\/p>\n
Both unions are demanding better wages and working conditions as well as higher residual rates related to streaming.
\nMany late-night shows including NBC\u2019s \u2018Saturday Night Live,\u2019 and ABC\u2019s \u2018Jimmy Kimmel Live\u2019 remain out of production as a result.<\/p>\n
