DHAKA 01 April (Online): Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Friday urged Bangladesh to suspend plans to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar warning conditions there would not be safe for the persecuted and stateless minority.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh is home to around a million Rohingya, most of whom fled a 2017 military crackdown in neighbouring Myanmar that is now subject to a UN genocide investigation.<\/p>\n
A delegation from Myanmar\u2019s military regime travelled to Bangladesh this month to interview potential candidates for return and jump-start a stalled repatriation scheme.<\/p>\n
But any return to Myanmar would put the lives and liberty of refugees \u201cat grave risk\u201d, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cVoluntary, safe, and dignified returns of Rohingya refugees to Myan\u00acmar are not possible while the military junta is carrying out massacres around the country,\u201d said Meenakshi Ganguly, HRW\u2019s South Asia director.<\/p>\n
Rohingya in the camps told HRW they \u201cwere lied to, deceived, or otherwise coerced by Bangladesh administrators\u201d into meet\u00acing the Myanmar delegation, the watchdog said.<\/p>\n
Some of the 15 refugees interviewed by the watchdog said they had been lured into the meetings on the understanding they were to discuss possible resettlement to a third country.<\/p>\n
The Rohingya are widely viewed in Myanmar as interlopers from Bangladesh, despite roots in the country stretching back centuries, and are stateless after Myanmar ceased recognising their citizenship in 2015.<\/p>\n
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, who has dismissed the Rohingya identity as \u201cimaginary\u201d, was head of the armed forces during the 2017 crackdown.<\/p>\n
The International Court of Justice is probing allegations of systematic rape, murder and arson against Rohingya by Myanmar\u2019s security forces.<\/p>\n
Rights groups have accused the junta of planning to orchestrate a \u201ctoken\u201d return of refugees to avoid the court\u2019s censure.<\/p>\n
A junta spokesman said this month that Myanmar could accept \u201caround 1,000\u201d members of the minority as soon as mid-April.<\/p>\n
But a senior foreign ministry official in Bangladesh, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the amount of preparation still needed made that timeframe doubtful.<\/p>\n
He also denied his country would force refugees to return.<\/p>\n
Human Rights Watch said Bangladesh had been intensifying restrictions on livelihoods, movement and education in an apparent effort \u201cto coerce refugees into considering returning to Myanmar.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thousands of Rohingya risk their lives each year making perilous journeys from camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar to reach Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Last week, around 180 Rohingya attempting to flee to Malaysia from Myanmar\u2019s Rakhine state were arrested by authorities, according to a security official.<\/p>\n
They did not specify why the group had been arrested, but the Muslim minority faces restrictions on travelling within Myanmar, where rights groups say they live in apartheid-like conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
