UNITED NATIONS, Dec 30 (APP): The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, Friday called for a coordinated regional approach to protect thousands of Rohingya Muslims risking their lives on perilous sea voyages.<\/p>\n
“More than 2,400 Rohingya have sought to leave Bangladesh and Myanmar in 2022 alone, and I am deeply saddened that over 200 have reportedly lost their lives on the way,” Turk said in a statement, which came in in the wake of the latest sea rescue of Rohingya refugees by Indonesian fishing crews.<\/p>\n
Expressing deep sadness, Turk said that the boats used to make the crossings were not only \u201covercrowded and unsafe\u201d but also \u201cleft to drift for days on without any help\u201d.<\/p>\n
With no sign in sight of the crisis ending, the UN rights chief urged more countries to assist in their safekeeping.<\/p>\n
Specifically, Turk urged the states to coordinate proactive search and rescue operations, disembark Rohingya refugees on their territories, and ensure their protection.<\/p>\n
He also called on regional and countries globally to help Bangladesh support the over one million Rohingya refugees who had sought protection there since 2017.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn urgent solution must be found to enable the voluntary return of all Rohingya, with full respect of their dignity and human rights as full and equal citizens of Myanmar,\u201d underscored the high commissioner.<\/p>\n
At the close of 2022, the senior UN official reflected on \u201cthe story we’d like to write for our future\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy hope for next year is that we lead our lives, individually and collectively, with kindness, empathy, and unity. In how we relate to each other. In our homes, neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, [and] online\u201d, he said in his look ahead message for 2023.<\/p>\n
Turk reminded that if human rights were not protected \u201cin the little places\u201d, they lacked meaning anywhere.<\/p>\n
He argued for the protection of women\u2019s rights at home and in public, saying that women and girls must have \u201cfull equality and freedom from discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n
Children\u2019s eyes must also be opened to the mistakes of the past, so they could \u201cwrite a story of hope and unity\u201d to create a better world in which \u201cwe celebrate diversity, convinced that we are stronger together than we are apart\u201d, added the UN right chief.<\/p>\n
He hoped for a future of online expression, protected from hatred and disinformation with consideration for other viewpoints; respectful disagreements; and embraced diversity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThink of the person on the other side of the screen,\u201d urged the high commissioner, reminding that \u201cthere is no place for dehumanizing the other by using reductionist labels or identity politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope our shared humanity will be our guide.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turk regarded human rights as \u201cthe force that come in and unify us\u201d, bringing everyone \u201cback to the fundamentals of who we are, of human dignity and to what connects us all with each other\u201d.<\/p>\n
He argued that one person\u2019s pain ultimately hurts everyone and underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights of current and future generations.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s treat our planet with the kindness and the humility it deserves. And let\u2019s make sure that actions to safeguard our environment are grounded in the human rights of all.<\/p>\n
“This requires bravery and the courage to listen and speak up when others are being wronged, to live in a space in which everyone can safely exercise their rights in justice and dignity,” he stressed.<\/p>\n
