KARACHI 29 Dec (Online): The world may be divided by borders but at the end of the day, they\u2019re just imaginary lines. Mahira Khan talked about the blurring of these lines where artists in Pakistan and India are concerned, adding that they can\u2019t be open about their good bond in order to \u201cprotect each other\u201d and avoid becoming \u201cscapegoats\u201d.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Variety, she talked about her time in Bollywood. \u201cI had the most amazing time working in India. I am still in touch with so many people and there\u2019s a lot of love there. Unfortunately, we are easy targets, soft targets, whether it\u2019s us here in Pakistan, whether it\u2019s them there in India,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She said as artists, they are connected by the thread of art and understand each other very well. \u201cSo we\u2019re trying to look out for each other, more than anything. Even now, we are so careful with what we write on social media. It\u2019s not that we don\u2019t talk to each other. It\u2019s not that we don\u2019t wish each other on our birthdays. It\u2019s not that we don\u2019t meet each other in different countries. It\u2019s not that, it\u2019s just that we are actually not just protecting ourselves but protecting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Raees actor said it\u2019s not personal, but political. \u201cOn both ends, until the time that scapegoats are needed, we will always be that,\u201d Khan added. Painting a positive picture, she said it could get better if the people in power do not use the artists as an easy target. According to her, the collaboration that would come, as a result, would be \u201clovely\u201d.<\/p>\n
Calling her Maula Jatt character Mukkho \u201cempowered\u201d, she compared the 1979 cult classic and the reboot, saying the representation of women is quite different. \u201c[Mukkho] loved fearlessly, her moral compass was so intact, she had integrity and she was fierce also,\u201d said Khan. \u201cThat was a very big thing that the women in this, in today\u2019s Maula Jatt, are very empowered. And I think this is something that a lot of people asked me prior to the release that \u2018Are we going to see the same 1970s representation of women?\u2019 I said, \u2018No, you\u2019re going to see Bilal Lashari\u2019s representation of women.\u2019 I\u2019m glad to have been a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
After a super successful run, The Legend of Maula Jatt is now looking at releasing in Turkey and China. Another Pakistani film that\u2019s doing particularly well internationally is Saim Sadiq\u2019s Joyland. Connecting the two, the Superstar actor said we need more visionary storytellers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether it\u2019s Joyland, whether it\u2019s Maula Jatt, the people at the helm of these projects are passionate.
