WASHINGTON, Apr 26 (APP): The state of religious freedom in India \u201csignificantly worsened\u201d last year, a U.S. panel’s report has said, calling for targeted sanctions against the country over alleged abuses.<\/p>\n
In its annual report released on Monday, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) urged the State Department for the third straight year to place India on the US list of \u201ccountries of particular concern\u201d.<\/p>\n
The independent bipartisan panel pointed to “numerous” attacks on religious minorities, particularly Muslims and Christians, in 2021 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government promoted “its ideological vision of a Hindu state” through policies “hostile to minorities”. ”<\/p>\n
It accused India of \u201cengaging in and tolerating systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n
India\u2019s Muslim minority has been facing mob violence and attacks by right-wing Hindu groups. A report from Associated Press, a US news agency, says that hate-filled songs are a becoming weapon to target Indian Muslims<\/p>\n
The USCIRF also puts forward recommendations and documents abuses, but the State Department ultimately makes the decision on the religious freedom blacklist.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the year, the Indian government escalated its promotion and enforcement of policies\u2014including those promoting a Hindu-nationalist agenda\u2014that negatively affect Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, and other religious minorities,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government continued to systemize its ideological vision of a Hindu state at both the national and state levels through the use of both existing and new laws and structural changes hostile to the country\u2019s religious minorities.\u201d<\/p>\n
India has previously rejected the commission\u2019s recommendation to blacklist the country over the violations of religious freedom, claiming that the findings were \u201cbiased\u201d.<\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s report comes as US officials say they are seeking \u201cmaximum alignment\u201d with India over Russia policy and the war in Ukraine. Washington has also been strengthening ties with New Delhi amid growing competition with China.<\/p>\n
US President Joe Biden held a virtual meeting with Indian Prime Minister Modi earlier this month and the two leaders are set to meet in Tokyo next month as part of a summit for the leaders of the Asia-Pacific \u201cQuad\u201d alliance, which also includes Japan and Australia.<\/p>\n
Still, the USCIRF on Monday accused India of repressing human rights defenders from religious minorities.<\/p>\n
The commission hit out against the Indian government over a citizenship law that
\nfast-tracks naturalisation for non-Muslims, calling it \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d, while also slamming anti-religious conversion laws that it said target interfaith marriages in some states.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment action, including the continued enforcement of anti-conversion laws against non-Hindus, has created a culture of impunity for nationwide campaigns of threats and violence by mobs and vigilante groups, including against Muslims and Christians accused of conversion activities,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
