UNITED NATIONS, Aug 26 (APP):The World Food Programme (WFP), a Rome-based UN agency, has warned that Afghanistan is facing a hunger crisis following a recent drought, mounting food prices, and political turmoil, saying it urgently needs $200 million to support 14 million people until the end of year.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s second drought in three years had devastated crops and heightened food insecurity, with more than 40 percent of the country\u2019s crops lost to drought this year, while the socioeconomic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic had left \u201cessential food out of reach for many families,\u201d the WFP said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, since the beginning of the year, conflict and insecurity have driven more than 550,000 Afghans from their homes as some 70,000 displaced people have converged from across the country into the capital, Kabul.<\/p>\n
And as the cost of sustenance has surged in recent months, WFP Regional Director John Aylieff pointed out that 14 million people in Afghanistan are struggling to put food on the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe price of wheat has gone up by 25 per cent in the last months and, therefore, with the economic situation\u2026 and with the turmoil in which the country has been thrown, it is very difficult now to see the future for this population\u2026 a future which is food secure\u2026without malnourished children\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
This month, WFP plans to reach almost 500,000 people in and around Mazar, the fourth-largest city of Afghanistan, with wheat flour, oil, lentils and salt.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no crops, no raining, no water and people are living in misery\u201d, Delawar, a 52-year-old Afghan, was quoted as saying by WFP, adding that the agency\u2019s assistance is \u201ca great mercy from God\u201d that \u201creally helps poor and needy people\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, as the UN agency is due to run out of wheat flour as early as October, it said it requires immediate funds upfront to support the millions depending on it to deliver food.<\/p>\n
This is Afghanistan\u2019s hour of greatest need and we need the international community to step up and support them, the WFP said.<\/p>\n
As thousands of people try to leave from the Kabul airport, WFP reported that relatively few have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have plans in place to assist if they do cross land borders\u201d, the UN agency said, noting that if donors want to avoid large refugee outflows, it is \u201cimperative\u201d that WFP\u2019s food operations inside the country are not interrupted.<\/p>\n
The UN agency described funding existing needs in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Tajikistan as most urgent, saying that it needs $200 million for Afghanistan and
