UNITED NATIONS, Dec 10 : UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres marked Human Rights Day with a stark warning Tuesday about escalating violation of human rights globally, saying \u201cAuthoritarianism is on the march while civic space is shrinking:,<\/p>\n
\u201cOn Human Rights Day, we face a harsh truth. Human rights are under assault,\u201d the UN chief said in a message, while calling for collective action to address rights violations..<\/p>\n
Highlighting the enduring effects of the coronavirus pandemic, Guterres said: \u201cTens of millions of people are mired in poverty, hunger, poor health, and education systems that have not yet fully recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGlobal inequalities are running rampant. Conflicts are intensifying,\u201d he said, noting that \u201call human rights are indivisible.\u201d<\/p>\n
He warned that when one right is undermined, it weakens the foundation of all others.<\/p>\n
Expressing deep concern over the rise of global inequalities, intensifying conflicts, and the erosion of international law, Guterres denounced the growing prevalence of \u201chateful rhetoric is fueling discrimination, division, and outright violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Guterres underscored the importance of environmental rights, advocating for \u201cthe right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment,\u201d and called for greater support for human rights defenders, who he described as playing a \u201cvital role\u201d in safeguarding freedoms around the world.<\/p>\n
Noting the significance of the Pact for the Future, Guterres described it as a \u201creinforced commitment\u201d to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted 75 years ago.<\/p>\n
