UNITED NATIONS, Sep 01 : The massive United Nations-led campaign to vaccinate hundreds of thousands of children in war-shattered Gaza against polio began Sunday., with a UN official calling it successful so far.<\/p>\n
While a first group of children received polio vaccinations in Gaza on Saturday, the programme officially started a day later in Gaza\u2019s \u201cmiddle areas,\u201d according to the UN\u2019s agency caring for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, it\u2019s going well and the turnaround is really good,\u201d Salim Oweis, a spokesman for the UN children\u2019s fund Unicef, told reporters in Gazam according to media reports.<\/p>\n
To be effective, the World Health Organization (WHO) says at least 90% of children under 10 must be immunized in a short 3-day time frame. The drive follows the first confirmed case of polio in 25 years in Gaza.<\/p>\n
UNRWA, the main UN agency in Gaza, has set targets to immunize 640,000 children in the besieged enclave, facilitated by a series of pauses in the Israeli attacks agreed by Israel. This equates to over 90% of children under the age of 10.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Palestinian health officials have stressed that a \u201creal ceasefire\u201d is needed for the polio vaccination drive to be fully successful.<\/p>\n
During a news conference organized by the Ministry of Health in Gaza to officially launch the campaign, Deputy Health Minister Yousef Abu Al-Reesh said that vaccination teams are committed to traveling to \u201cwherever there is a Palestinian person who needs this vaccination, despite the risks.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, it must be said that if the international community wants this campaign to succeed, everyone knows that this virus does not stop at borders and can reach everywhere. There needs to be a ceasefire so that the teams can reach everyone who is targeted by this campaign,\u201d the minister was quoted as saying by media reports.<\/p>\n
But there are concerns that the Israeli military won\u2019t honour the pauses in fighting, going by its previous record.<\/p>\n
UNRWA\u2019s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that there is a \u201crace against time to reach just over 600,000 children across the Gaza Strip in the coming days\u201d in a post on X on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor this to work, parties to the conflict must respect the temporary area pauses. For the sake of children across the region, a lasting ceasefire is overdue,\u201d Lazzarini wrote.<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also called for peace in a statement on X: \u201cChildren in Gaza are receiving much-needed polio vaccines today. Ultimately, the best vaccine for these children is peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
The return of polio to Gaza is a measure of the destruction wrought by more than 10 months of Israeli bombardment. The UN\u2019s campaign comes after the highly infectious virus was found in sewage samples in the strip in June. A baby has since become the first person in Gaza in 25 years to be diagnosed with polio.<\/p>\n
Before the war, Gaza had near-universal polio vaccine coverage, but it has since dropped below 90%. Polio mostly affects children under 5 years old, and can cause irreversible paralysis and even death. It\u2019s highly infectious and there is no cure. It can only be prevented by immunization, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n
The vaccination drive comes as aid agencies reported Israeli attacks on their convoys. One agency said an Israeli strike on a humanitarian vehicle in Gaza killed several employees of a transportation company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
